How to use this tool

To crop a video, choose the file, pick a ratio such as 9:16 or 1:1 or drag a box on the frame, and press Create file. Cropping cuts away the edges of the picture, so you can remove black bars or a busy background, or turn a landscape clip into a vertical video for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. You get an MP4 with the original sound, made in your browser with no upload and no watermark.

  1. 01

    Choose your video

Click Choose files and pick an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV video, up to 100 MB and 10 minutes. A still frame appears so you can see what you are cropping.

  2. 02

    Set the crop area

Pick 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 or 4:3 to place a centered box of that shape, then drag on the frame to move or resize it. Free lets you draw any box. Crop width, Crop height, Left and Top give the exact position in percent.

  3. 03

    Export the MP4

Press Create file, play the cropped video and click Download. The sound is kept and the file is named after your video, ending in -cropped.mp4.

Aspect ratios for each platform

• 9:16 vertical: TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and Stories • 1:1 square: feed posts on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn • 4:5 portrait: the tallest Instagram feed post • 16:9 wide: YouTube, presentations and TVs • 4:3: classic camera and tablet format A 9:16 crop of a 16:9 clip uses about a third of the width, so place the box on the subject.

Crop vs resize

Cropping keeps part of the picture at its full sharpness and removes the rest. Resizing scales the whole picture into a new shape. To fit an entire landscape video into a vertical frame with blurred bars, use the SocQ social media video resizer; to shorten the clip, use the video trimmer.

Removing black bars

For letterbox bars at the top and bottom, or pillar bars at the sides, choose Free and draw the box just inside the bars. Use the numbers to make it exact: if the bars are 12% at the top and bottom, set Top to 12 and Crop height to 76.
