How to use this tool

Pricing a product, checking a receipt or quoting a client? Enter a price and the combined sales tax rate to see the tax and the total. Switch to Remove tax when you have a price that already includes tax and need the amount before tax, for example to report revenue or compare quotes.

  1. 01

    Choose add or remove

Add tax to price gives the total a buyer pays. Remove tax from price works back from a tax-inclusive total.

  2. 02

    Enter price and rate

Type the price and the combined tax rate for the buyer’s location, such as 8.25 for 8.25%.

  3. 03

    Read and copy

See the tax and the total, or the price before tax, with the formula. Copy them into an invoice or listing.

Sales tax formulas

• Add tax: tax = price × rate ÷ 100, and total = price + tax. • Remove tax: price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and tax = total − price before tax. Don’t remove tax by subtracting the rate from the total: 8.25% of a tax-inclusive price is more than the tax that was actually added.

Finding the right rate in the US

US sales tax is set by states and often added to by counties, cities and special districts, so the rate depends on where the buyer is. The combined rate can range from 0% in states without a sales tax to above 10% in some cities. Look up the combined rate for the delivery address on your state tax agency’s website.

Sales tax vs VAT and GST

Many countries use value added tax (VAT) or goods and services tax (GST) instead of sales tax, and shelf prices usually already include it. The same formulas work: use Remove tax to find the net price from a VAT-inclusive price, for example with a 20% UK VAT rate.

For online sellers and creators

Selling merch, presets or courses online can create tax obligations in places where your buyers live. Marketplaces and checkout platforms often collect and remit tax for you. This calculator is for quick estimates; check with a tax professional about what you need to collect and file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the tax rate and divide by 100. For $49.99 at 8.25%: 49.99 × 8.25 ÷ 100 = $4.12.

How do I add sales tax to a price?

Choose Add tax to price. The total is the price plus the tax, or price × (1 + rate ÷ 100).

How do I find the price before tax?

Choose Remove tax from price and enter the tax-inclusive total. The calculator divides it by 1 plus the rate, for example 54.11 ÷ 1.0825 ≈ 49.99.

Why can’t I just subtract the tax percentage from the total?

The tax was calculated on the lower pre-tax price, so taking the same percentage off the higher total removes too much. Use the reverse formula instead.

What sales tax rate should I use?

Use the combined rate for the buyer’s location: state plus any county, city and district rates. State tax agencies publish rate lookup tools.

Does it work for VAT or GST?

Yes. Enter the VAT or GST rate. Use Remove tax when prices already include it, which is common outside the US.

How is tax rounded?

Results are shown to the nearest cent. Some checkouts round per item and others per order, so totals may differ by a cent.

Can I calculate tax on several items?

Add the item prices together first and enter the subtotal, unless some items are taxed at a different rate.

Are my numbers stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to SocQ or saved.

Is the sales tax calculator free?

Yes. It’s free with no signup and no limit.
