How to use this tool

This online tone generator plays a steady sound at the exact frequency you choose. Type a value in hertz or drag the slider from 1 Hz to 20 kHz, pick a sine, square, sawtooth or triangle wave and press Play. Frequency, waveform and volume update live while the tone plays, the nearest musical note is shown, and Download WAV saves 5 to 60 seconds of the tone.

  1. 01

    Set the frequency

Type any value from 1 to 20,000 Hz, use the −1 / +1 buttons, drag the slider, or tap a preset such as 60 Hz, 440 Hz or 1 kHz.

  2. 02

    Choose a waveform and play

Pick Sine for a pure tone, or Square, Sawtooth or Triangle for brighter tones with harmonics. Press Play and set the volume, which starts at 40%.

  3. 03

    Download a WAV file

Choose a length of 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds and press Download WAV to save the current tone with soft fades at both ends.

Waveforms compared

• Sine: a single pure frequency; best for hearing checks, tuning references and speaker tests • Square: hollow and buzzy, with strong odd harmonics • Sawtooth: bright and rich, with every harmonic; common in synthesizers • Triangle: softer than square, with gentle odd harmonics For measuring a speaker or your hearing, choose Sine so exactly one frequency plays.

Common frequencies and what they are for

• 20–60 Hz: sub-bass; checks subwoofers and room rumble • 100–250 Hz: bass and the low range of voices • 261.63 Hz: middle C (C4) • 440 Hz: A4, the concert tuning pitch • 432 Hz and 528 Hz: popular in meditation and relaxation music • 1 kHz: the standard reference tone for audio equipment • 10–20 kHz: treble and the upper range of hearing All of these are one tap away in the presets: 60, 100, 261.63, 432, 440, 528, 1000 and 10000 Hz.

Use it safely and creatively

Start at a low volume and raise it slowly. Low tones move speaker cones a lot, and tones above 15 kHz can be strong even when they seem quiet. Square and sawtooth waves sound louder than a sine at the same setting. Creators use saved WAV tones as test signals, a 1 kHz bleep for censoring words in a video, or a tuning reference for covers posted on TikTok and YouTube.

Frequently asked questions

What is a tone generator?

A tool that plays a steady sound at a frequency you choose, measured in hertz (Hz). Higher numbers sound higher.

What frequency range can I play?

Any frequency from 1 Hz to 20,000 Hz, with decimals. Most people hear about 20 Hz to 16–20 kHz, and headphones or a subwoofer bring out the deepest tones.

Can I download the tone?

Yes. Choose 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds and press Download WAV. The file uses the current frequency, waveform and volume.

Can I use it for a hearing test?

Yes, as a quick check of which high frequencies you hear on your own headphones. For a calibrated clinical hearing test, visit an audiologist.

Can I find my tinnitus frequency?

Many people use a sine tone to match the pitch they hear. Start very quietly, and share the matched frequency with an audiologist for diagnosis and treatment.

How do I hear very low tones?

Use headphones or a subwoofer, which reproduce deep bass far better than laptop or phone speakers. High tones depend on your hearing, which shifts with age.

Can I change the frequency while it plays?

Yes. Typing, the slider, the presets, the waveform and the volume all apply immediately without restarting the tone.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. On iPhone, turn off silent mode if you hear nothing.

Is it accurate?

Yes. The tone is generated digitally at the exact frequency you enter, including decimals such as 261.63 Hz.

Is the tone generator free?

Yes. It is free with no signup and no download, and you can save as many WAV files as you like.
