How to use this tool
When a new headline or landing page converts better, it’s hard to tell a real improvement from random noise. This calculator runs a two-proportion z-test on your visitor and conversion counts and reports both conversion rates, the relative lift, a two-sided p-value and a 95% interval for the difference. It’s built for marketers and product teams reviewing a finished test with two versions.
- 01
Enter version A
Fill in A: visitors and A: conversions with the totals for your control. Use whole numbers from the full, planned test period.
- 02
Enter version B
Fill in B: visitors and B: conversions the same way. Each group needs at least 10 conversions and 10 non-conversions, or the tool asks for more data.
- 03
Calculate and read the result
Press Calculate to see both rates, the lift, the p-value and the 95% interval in percentage points. A note says whether p is below 0.05, and Copy saves it all.
How the significance test works
The calculator uses a pooled two-proportion z-test, the standard way to compare two conversion rates. 1. It finds each conversion rate: conversions ÷ visitors. 2. It pools both groups to estimate the standard error of the difference. 3. It divides the difference by that standard error to get z. 4. It converts z into a two-sided p-value. In the example, 5% vs. 6.5% gives z ≈ 4.56 and p ≈ 0.000005.
How to read p-value, lift and the 95% interval
The p-value is the chance of seeing a gap at least this large if A and B truly converted at the same rate; below 0.05 is the common cutoff. Relative lift shows how much higher B’s rate is than A’s. The 95% interval gives a plausible range for the absolute difference in percentage points: if it sits entirely above zero, the data point to B being better, and if it crosses zero, the test hasn’t settled the question.
Mistakes that make A/B tests unreliable
• Stopping the test the moment p dips below 0.05; decide the sample size or duration in advance. • Running too briefly to cover both weekday and weekend behavior. • Changing the traffic split, targeting or page during the test. • Testing many variants or metrics and reporting only the winner. • Ignoring practical size: a significant 0.1-point gain may not be worth shipping.
What this calculator does and doesn’t do
It compares two independent groups on one yes-or-no conversion metric, at a fixed 0.05 significance level with a 95% interval. It doesn’t estimate sample size, handle more than two variants, test averages like order value or run a Bayesian analysis. Inputs must be whole numbers with at least 10 conversions and 10 non-conversions per group, because the normal approximation gets unreliable below that.
Frequently asked questions
What is statistical significance in an A/B test?
It means the difference between version A and version B is larger than you would usually expect from random chance alone. In practice, a result is called significant when the p-value is below 0.05. Significance says the gap is probably real, not that it’s big enough to matter.
How do I check if my A/B test is significant?
1. Wait until the test reaches its planned sample size or duration. 2. Enter visitors and conversions for A and B. 3. Press Calculate. 4. If the p-value is below 0.05, the difference is significant at the 5% level; also check the 95% interval and lift.
What does a p-value of 0.05 mean?
If A and B truly had the same conversion rate, you would see a difference at least this large about 5% of the time. It isn’t the probability that B is better, and it isn’t a 95% chance the result is correct. Smaller p-values mean the data are harder to explain by chance.
What confidence level does this calculator use?
It uses a fixed 0.05 threshold for the two-sided test and a 95% interval for the difference. The exact p-value is shown, so if your team uses a stricter cutoff such as 0.01, compare the p-value with that number yourself.
What is relative lift vs. absolute difference?
Absolute difference is B’s rate minus A’s, in percentage points: 6.5% − 5% = 1.5 points. Relative lift divides that by A’s rate: 1.5 ÷ 5 = 30%. Relative lift sounds bigger, so report both when you share results.
How many visitors do I need for an A/B test?
It depends on your baseline rate and the smallest lift you care about; lower rates and smaller lifts need far more visitors. Estimate it with a sample size calculator before the test starts. This tool checks finished results and needs at least 10 conversions and 10 non-conversions per group.
Why does the calculator ask for more data?
The test relies on a normal approximation, which needs whole-number counts and at least 10 conversions and 10 non-conversions in each group. Conversions also can’t exceed visitors. Collect more traffic or check for typos, then calculate again.
Can I use this to compare CTR between two ads?
Yes. Any yes-or-no outcome works: enter impressions as visitors and clicks as conversions to compare two creatives’ click-through rates. Keep the groups independent, with each person or impression assigned to only one version.
Is my test data uploaded?
No. The z-test runs in your browser, and the visitor and conversion counts you enter aren’t sent to SocQ or stored once you leave the page.
Is the A/B test calculator free?
Yes. It’s free with no signup or account. You can check as many finished tests as you like and copy every result, including the equation.
For developers
Add social context to your test results
SocQ APIs return public posts, profiles and comments from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn, so your campaign reports can show how audiences responded to the creative you tested. Test traffic and conversion counts still come from your testing or analytics tool.
