How X counts characters
X doesn’t simply count letters. It gives each character a weight: • English letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation and line breaks: 1 each. • Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters: 2 each. • Emoji: 2 each, including combined emoji like 👨👩👧. • Any web link: 23, however long or short it is. This counter uses twitter-text, the open-source counting library published by X, so its number should match what X shows.
Character limits on X
• Free accounts: 280 characters per post, reply or quote. • X Premium: long posts of up to 25,000 characters. Only about the first 280 show in the timeline; readers tap “Show more” to see the rest. • Chinese, Japanese and Korean: because each character counts as 2, a standard post fits about 140 of them. Photos, videos, GIFs and polls you attach don’t use any characters.
Why check your post before you publish
X’s post box only shows a small circle until you get close to the limit. Here you see the exact number left, how far over you are and how much a link or emoji costs. That makes it easy to fit a link into a short post, tighten your opening line or check a long Premium post before you publish.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Twitter (X) character counter?
A Twitter or X character counter tells you how many characters your post uses and how many are left before you reach the limit. This one follows X’s rules, so a link counts as 23 and emoji and Chinese characters count as 2. Edit your post here, then copy it into X.
How many characters can a tweet have?
A standard post on X can have up to 280 characters. If you subscribe to X Premium, you can write long posts of up to 25,000 characters. Replies and quote posts follow the same limits.
How does X count links?
Every link counts as 23 characters, no matter how long it is. X shortens all links with its t.co service, so https://socq.ai and a 100-character link both use 23. Add your link in the counter to see exactly how much room is left for your message.
Do emoji count as 2 characters on X?
Yes. Emoji count as 2 characters each. Emoji made of several parts, such as a family 👨👩👧👦 or a flag, still count as one emoji, so they also use 2. Paste your post to see how many characters your emoji add.
How many Chinese characters can I post on X?
Each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts as 2, so a standard 280-character post fits about 140 Chinese characters. English letters, numbers and spaces count as 1, so mixing them in changes the total. Paste your text here to see the exact count.
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes. Every space and every line break counts as 1 character. A blank line between two paragraphs uses 2: one to end the first line and one for the empty line. If you’re just over the limit, removing extra spaces or blank lines is a quick fix.
Do @mentions, hashtags and photos count?
Hashtags and @mentions you type count like regular text, including the # or @. When you reply, the @usernames that X adds automatically at the top don’t count. Photos, videos, GIFs and polls you attach don’t use any characters either.
What is the X Premium character limit?
X Premium subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters in a single post. In the timeline, long posts are cut after about 280 characters with a “Show more” link. Choose X Premium long post above to check a long post, and put your main point in the first 280 characters.
Why is my count different from other counters?
Many counters just count letters, so they treat every emoji, link and Chinese character as 1. X weighs them differently: links count as 23, and emoji and Chinese characters count as 2. This counter uses X’s own counting rules, so its number should match what X shows.
Can I use this counter for threads?
Yes. Check each post in your thread one at a time. Paste the first post, make sure it’s within the limit and copy it, then clear the box and paste the next one. Each post in a thread has its own limit.
