Why you need a formatter for LinkedIn posts

When you write a regular LinkedIn post or comment, there are no buttons for bold, italic or lists. Only LinkedIn Articles and Newsletters have a real formatting bar. This formatter swaps the letters you select for Unicode characters that look bold or italic. They’re real characters, so they keep their look when you paste them into LinkedIn on your phone or computer.

Where you can use formatted text on LinkedIn

Paste formatted text into posts, comments, your profile headline, your About section and the descriptions of your jobs. It also works in company page posts. Keep your name in regular letters so people can still find you in LinkedIn search.

LinkedIn character limits to know

• Post: up to 3,000 characters. • Before “…see more”: about the first 210 characters show on a computer and about 140 on a phone. • Headline: up to 220 characters. • About section: up to 2,600 characters. Styled letters can use more of the limit than regular letters, so check the count in LinkedIn if your post is close to 3,000.

How to use bold without hurting your post

• Bold one opening sentence or two or three key phrases. A post that’s all bold is hard to read. • Keep keywords, your company and job titles in regular text. LinkedIn search treats styled letters as different characters and may not find them. • Screen readers may skip styled words or read them letter by letter, so don’t put important details only in bold. • @mentions, #hashtags and links in your selection stay in regular letters, so they still work.

Frequently asked questions

What is a LinkedIn text formatter?

A LinkedIn text formatter is a free tool that adds bold, italic and bullet points to text you want to post on LinkedIn. You format your draft here, then copy and paste it into LinkedIn. The styling stays because it’s built into the characters themselves.

Can you bold text on LinkedIn?

Not in a regular post or comment. LinkedIn has no bold button there, on the website or in the app. LinkedIn Articles and Newsletters do have a formatting bar. For posts, comments and your profile, create bold text with a formatter like this one, then paste it in.

How do I bold text in a LinkedIn post?

1. Paste your post into the editor above. 2. Highlight the words you want in bold. 3. Click Bold. 4. Click Copy post. 5. In LinkedIn, click Start a post, paste the text and click Post. You can bold several parts of the post before you copy it.

How do I write in italics on LinkedIn?

Select the words in the editor and click Italic. Italics work well for a quote, the name of a book or product, or a short side note. Click Copy post and paste the text into LinkedIn. To remove italics later, select the words and click Plain text.

How do I add bullet points to a LinkedIn post?

Put each point on its own line, select those lines and click Bullet list. A “•” is added at the start of each line. If a line already starts with -, * or •, it’s replaced, so you won’t get double bullets. Copy the post and paste it into LinkedIn; the bullets stay.

How do I add line breaks and spacing in a LinkedIn post?

Press Enter once to start a new line and twice to leave a blank line between paragraphs. Short paragraphs of one to three lines are easier to read on a phone. Copy post keeps all your line breaks when you paste the text into LinkedIn.

Does bold text hurt LinkedIn search or accessibility?

It can. To LinkedIn search, 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 and sales are different words, so a styled keyword may not be found. Screen readers may also read styled letters one at a time or skip them. Use bold for a few words that grab attention, and keep keywords and key facts in regular text.

Why does my bold text look different on some phones?

Bold and italic letters are special Unicode characters. Almost all modern phones and computers can show them, but a few older devices or apps may show boxes instead. The letter shapes can also look slightly different from one phone to another. Check your post on your own phone after you publish.

Can I change formatted text back to normal?

Yes. Select the styled words and click Plain text, and they turn back into regular letters. If nothing is selected, Plain text resets the whole draft. Your line breaks, bullet points, Chinese text and punctuation stay as they are.

Which characters can be made bold or italic?

English letters A to Z can be made bold or italic, and the numbers 0 to 9 can be made bold. Chinese, Japanese and other languages, emoji and punctuation don’t have bold versions, so they stay as they are. @mentions, #hashtags and links stay in regular letters so they keep working.
