How to use this tool
Showing an ad too rarely means people forget it; showing it too often wears them out and pushes costs up. This calculator divides impressions by reach to give you average frequency, the number that tells you which side of that line you’re on. It’s handy for social media advertisers, media planners and anyone reviewing a Meta, TikTok or YouTube campaign report.
- 01
Enter impressions
Type the total impressions from your ad report into Impressions. Every time the ad is shown counts, including repeat views by the same person.
- 02
Enter people reached
Add the unique reach for the same campaign and date range in People reached. Reach can’t be higher than impressions.
- 03
Calculate and track
Press Calculate to see average frequency, such as 2 ×, with the equation 10000 ÷ 5000. Repeat it each week and copy the result to follow the trend.
Ad frequency formula with a worked example
Frequency = impressions ÷ reach. 10,000 impressions across 5,000 people gives 10,000 ÷ 5,000 = 2. If the same campaign later reaches 15,000 impressions with only 6,000 people reached, frequency climbs to 2.5, a sign that more of the spend is going to people who have already seen the ad.
What is a good ad frequency?
There is no single right number; it depends on the goal, audience size and time window. Practitioner guides for Meta often suggest keeping cold, prospecting audiences around 1 to 3 impressions per week, while retargeting audiences can tolerate more because they already know you. Read frequency over a fixed window, such as 7 days, since the lifetime figure keeps rising the longer a campaign runs.
Signs of ad fatigue and how to fix it
Watch for frequency rising while CTR falls and CPC or CPM climbs. When that happens: • Rotate in new creative or a fresh hook. • Widen the audience or add new interest or lookalike segments. • Set a frequency cap where the platform offers one. • Exclude people who have already converted. • Pause the ad set briefly and relaunch it with new assets.
Frequency, reach and impressions explained
Impressions count every time the ad appears. Reach counts unique people or accounts who saw it at least once. Frequency is the average that links them, so a frequency of 3 can mean some people saw the ad once and others six times.
Frequently asked questions
What is ad frequency?
Ad frequency is the average number of times each person in your audience has seen your ad during a set period. Platforms such as Meta show it next to reach and impressions. It helps you judge whether an ad is seen often enough to be remembered or so often that it annoys people.
How do you calculate ad frequency?
1. Take total impressions for the campaign and period. 2. Take unique reach for the same campaign and period. 3. Divide impressions by reach. For 10,000 impressions and 5,000 people, frequency is 2.
What is a good frequency for Facebook ads?
For new audiences, many advertisers aim for roughly 1 to 3 per week and watch results closely once it climbs higher. Retargeting can run higher without hurting performance. Use your own CTR and CPA trend as the final check, since the healthy level varies by audience and creative.
Does a frequency of 3 mean everyone saw my ad three times?
No. Frequency is an average: total impressions divided by people reached. Some people may have seen the ad once while others saw it many times, and the overall average works out to 3.
Why does my frequency keep going up?
Frequency grows when impressions rise faster than new people are reached. That happens with small audiences, long-running campaigns or budgets that are large for the audience size. Expanding the audience or refreshing creative usually slows it down.
Can I add up reach from several campaigns?
Be careful. The same person can be reached by more than one campaign, so summed reach overstates unique people and makes frequency look lower than it is. When your ad platform reports deduplicated reach for the combined campaigns, use that number.
Why does the calculator show an error?
Reach must be above zero and can’t exceed impressions, because each person reached generates at least one impression. Check that both numbers come from the same report and date range, then calculate again.
What is frequency capping?
A frequency cap limits how many times one person can see your ad in a period, such as twice per week. Some campaign types and buying options let you set one, while others manage frequency automatically. Use this calculator to check whether actual delivery stays in your intended range.
Are the numbers I enter uploaded?
No. Frequency is calculated in your browser, and your impression and reach figures aren’t sent to SocQ or kept after you close or refresh the page.
Is the ad frequency calculator free?
Yes. It’s free, needs no signup or account, and you can recalculate as often as you like, for example once a week while a campaign runs.
For developers
Track creative fatigue with public social data
SocQ APIs fetch public posts, profiles and comments from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn, so your campaign reports can show how comments on your public posts change as a campaign runs. Reach and impression figures still come from your ad account.
