How to use this tool

A clean border separates a photo from a busy feed and gives a series a consistent, gallery-like look. This tool extends the canvas by the same number of pixels on all four sides, fills it with the color you choose and keeps the full photo inside. It’s for creators, photographers and brands who want simple frames without a design app.

  1. 01

    Upload the photo

Click Choose files and pick a JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF photo, or select up to 20 photos to frame them all the same way.

  2. 02

    Set width and color

Enter the border width in pixels (0–1,000) and pick the border color with the color picker. The same width is added to the top, bottom, left and right.

  3. 03

    Check the result and download

The result updates as you change settings. Check the new dimensions shown above the preview, then click Download or Download ZIP.

Why add a border to a photo

• Make photos stand out against a white or dark feed • Give a carousel or portfolio a matching look • Add breathing room around screenshots and product shots • Create a print-style white frame for photography posts

Border settings explained

• Border (px): width added to each side, from 0 to 1,000 pixels • Border color: any solid color; use #ffffff for white or #000000 for black • Output size: original width and height plus twice the border • Transparent areas in a PNG are filled with the border color

Tips for Instagram and other feeds

• Equal borders keep the photo close to its original shape; resize separately if you need an exact 1:1 or 4:5 post • Use the same border width across a series • Take a color from the photo for a frame that feels connected • Preview on your phone to make sure the app doesn’t crop the frame

Frequently asked questions

What is an add border to photo tool?

It’s a tool that puts a frame around an image by extending the canvas. Here you choose a width in pixels and a solid color, and the tool adds that frame evenly on all four sides and exports the result (JPG stays JPG, other formats save as PNG).

How do I add a border to a photo online for free?

1. Click Choose files and pick your photo. 2. Enter the border width in pixels. 3. Choose the border color. 4. Check the live result and click Download to save the image.

Does the border cover the edges of my photo?

No. The border is added outside the photo, so nothing is cropped or covered. Each side of the canvas grows by the width you set; a 1000 × 600 photo with a 24 px border becomes 1048 × 648.

How wide should a white border be for Instagram?

Set the color to white (#ffffff) and start with about 2–5% of the photo’s width, for example 40–60 px on a 1080 px image. The frame is part of the image file, so it shows up in the feed just like the photo itself.

Can I make a thick or colored frame?

Yes. The width can go up to 1,000 pixels per side and the color picker accepts any color, so you can match brand colors or pull a shade from the photo. SocQ’s Image Color Palette Generator can help you find a matching HEX value.

Is it free, and is there a watermark?

Yes, it’s free with no account needed. The downloaded image shows only your photo and the border you chose, with no SocQ watermark.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The frame is drawn on a canvas in your browser and the result is created on your device, so your photos aren’t sent to SocQ. There’s nothing to install either.

What formats and file sizes are supported?

You can open JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF images up to 30 MB and 40 megapixels each. A JPG is saved as a JPG at 90% quality and other formats as PNG; a very large photo with a very wide border can push the output past the 40-megapixel limit.

Can I add the same border to many photos?

Yes. Select up to 20 photos and each one gets the same width and color. When several results are ready, Download ZIP saves them all at once, which keeps a carousel or portfolio consistent.

Can I add rounded corners, shadows or a Polaroid frame?

This tool adds a flat, even border only; there are no shadows, gradients or uneven Polaroid-style margins. For rounded corners, run the bordered image through SocQ’s Round Image Corners tool afterward.
