How to use this tool

A caption on a GIF has to be drawn onto every frame, because a GIF has no separate text layer. Type your text, set the maximum size, color and position, and SocQ draws it with a dark outline on each frame, wrapping and shrinking long captions so they stay fully visible.

  1. 01

    Choose a GIF

Click Choose files and select a GIF up to 100 MB and 60 seconds long, or click Example to load a 320 × 180 test animation with sample text.

  2. 02

    Write and style the caption

Type your text in Headline and set Maximum text size (px) from 8 to 500. Pick the text color, then set Horizontal and Vertical position: 0% is the left or top edge, 50% is centered and 100% is the right or bottom edge.

  3. 03

    Create file and check readability

Click Create file. The first run downloads the font and video engine; then play gif-text.gif to confirm the caption reads well on every frame before you click Download.

How text placement works

• Horizontal position: 0% puts the text block at the left edge, 50% centers it and 100% pushes it to the right edge • Vertical position: 0% is the top, 50% the middle and 100% the bottom • Maximum text size: the starting font size in pixels; long captions wrap and shrink automatically • The caption can use up to about 88% of the frame’s width and 82% of its height

Making captions easy to read

• Keep it short: a few words read best on small GIFs • Use light text on dark scenes or dark text on light ones; the automatic dark outline helps on busy backgrounds • Place classic meme captions at the bottom (Vertical position 90–100%) so faces and action stay clear • Play the full loop, because a background that changes color can swallow part of the text

Fonts and languages

Text uses Noto Sans SC, a clean sans-serif font that covers English and Simplified Chinese. The font file downloads from the jsDelivr CDN when you create a file, so you need an internet connection. Emoji and decorative fonts aren’t supported, and each run adds one caption block.

Limits and privacy

• One GIF per run, up to 100 MB, 60 seconds and 4 million pixels per frame • The caption stays on screen for the whole animation; there’s no per-frame timing • Rendering runs in your browser with FFmpeg, so the GIF isn’t uploaded; only the engine and font files are downloaded

Frequently asked questions

What is an add text to GIF tool?

An add text to GIF tool draws a caption onto every frame of an animated GIF, so the words stay visible while the animation plays. People use it for meme captions, reaction GIFs, product labels and short instructions.

How do I add text to a GIF?

1. Click Choose files and select the GIF. 2. Type your caption in Headline. 3. Set Maximum text size (px), the text color and both positions. 4. Click Create file, check every frame and click Download.

Will my text appear on every frame?

Yes. The caption is drawn on each frame at the same position for the full length of the GIF. This tool can’t show text during only part of the animation.

Why is my text smaller than the size I chose?

The size you enter is a maximum. If the caption is too wide or too tall for the frame, the tool wraps it onto more lines and lowers the size until all of it fits. Shorten the text or use a larger GIF to keep the letters bigger.

Can I add Chinese text to a GIF?

Yes. The Noto Sans SC font covers Simplified Chinese as well as English letters and numbers. Emoji aren’t supported by the font, so they may be missing from the result.

How do I put text at the bottom like a meme?

Set Vertical position to 95–100% and Horizontal position to 50% to center the caption near the bottom edge. White or cream text with the automatic dark outline gives the familiar meme look.

Is my GIF uploaded to a server?

No. FFmpeg draws the text inside your browser tab, so the GIF and your caption stay on your device. The page only downloads the video engine and the font file from a public CDN.

Is it free, and is there a watermark?

Yes, it’s free without an account. The only words on the finished GIF are the ones you typed, with no SocQ watermark or logo anywhere on the frames.

Can I change the font or add more than one text box?

Not in this tool. Every caption uses Noto Sans SC Regular, and each run adds one text block that can wrap onto several lines. For a second caption, run the captioned GIF through the tool again with new text and a new position.

What are the limits for adding text to a GIF?

Each GIF can be up to 100 MB, 60 seconds long and 4 million pixels per frame. Maximum text size accepts 8–500 px, both positions accept 0–100%, and Headline can’t be left empty.
