How to use this tool
Views tell you how many people clicked, but not how long they stayed, and that’s what average view duration (AVD) measures. This calculator divides total watch hours by views to show how many seconds a typical view lasted, which is handy when a report gives you totals but not the average. It’s useful for YouTubers comparing videos, marketers reviewing a campaign and anyone checking whether a long video actually holds attention.
- 01
Enter total watch hours
Type the watch time for your video or date range into Total watch hours, such as 2000. If your report shows minutes, divide by 60 first.
- 02
Enter views for the same content
Type the view count for exactly the same video and dates into Views, using digits only, such as 100000.
- 03
Calculate average view duration
Select Calculate to see the result in Seconds with the formula. Divide by 60 for minutes, then select Copy to save it.
How average view duration is calculated
Average view duration (seconds) = total watch hours × 3,600 ÷ views. Multiplying by 3,600 converts hours to seconds, and dividing by views gives the average time per view. It’s an average, so some viewers left after a few seconds while others watched to the end. Worked example: 850 watch hours and 34,000 views gives 850 × 3,600 ÷ 34,000 = 90 seconds, an AVD of 1:30.
AVD vs average percentage viewed vs watch time
• Watch time: total hours viewers spent on the video. • Average view duration: watch time divided by views, in minutes and seconds. • Average percentage viewed: AVD divided by video length × 100. For example, a 72-second AVD on a 4-minute (240-second) video is 30% viewed. Use percentage viewed to compare videos of different lengths, and AVD to see absolute attention.
What counts as a good average view duration
There’s no universal target, because AVD depends heavily on video length, topic and traffic source. A 2-minute AVD can be strong for a 3-minute video and weak for a 30-minute one. Compare videos of similar length on your own channel, and look at the audience retention graph to see where viewers leave.
How to increase average view duration
• Deliver on the title and thumbnail in the first seconds. • Cut long intros, repeated points and slow transitions. • Add pattern changes such as B-roll, graphics or new examples where retention dips. • Tease what’s coming later so viewers have a reason to stay. • Use chapters so viewers jump to what they want instead of leaving.
Frequently asked questions
What is an average view duration calculator?
An average view duration calculator works out how long a typical view lasted from total watch time and views. This one converts your watch hours to seconds and divides by the number of views. It’s useful when a report gives totals but not the average, or when you combine several videos.
How do I calculate average view duration?
1. Find total watch time in hours for the video or period. 2. Multiply by 3,600 to convert to seconds. 3. Divide by total views. 4. Divide by 60 if you want minutes. For example, 500 hours × 3,600 ÷ 20,000 views = 90 seconds, or 1:30.
What is a good average view duration on YouTube?
It depends on video length and niche, so there’s no single good number. A better test is average percentage viewed: divide AVD by video length and compare with your other videos of similar length. If a video beats your usual percentage, it’s holding attention better than average for your channel.
What’s the difference between AVD and average percentage viewed?
Average view duration is a length of time, such as 1:12 per view. Average percentage viewed is that time as a share of the full video, such as 30% of a 4-minute video. AVD shows absolute attention; percentage viewed makes videos of different lengths comparable.
How do I turn the result in seconds into minutes?
Divide the seconds by 60: the whole number is minutes and the remainder is seconds. For example, 72 seconds is 1 minute 12 seconds (1:12), and 225 seconds is 3:45. The calculator shows seconds so you can convert to whichever format you need.
What if my report shows watch time in minutes?
Divide the minutes by 60 and enter the result in Total watch hours. For example, 120,000 minutes is 2,000 hours. Make sure the views you enter come from the same video and date range as the watch time.
Why does average view duration matter?
AVD shows whether a video keeps people watching once they click. Higher AVD adds to total watch time, which counts toward YouTube Partner Program thresholds, and it’s a clear signal of which topics and edits hold your audience. Tracking it next to click-through rate shows whether a problem is the packaging or the content.
Can I use it for TikTok, Instagram Reels or Facebook videos?
Yes, as long as you have total watch time and views for the same content. Convert the watch time to hours first, then enter both numbers. Some platforms already show an average watch time, which you can use to check the result.
Does the calculator access my analytics?
No. It runs in your browser with the two numbers you type and doesn’t connect to YouTube or any other platform. Your inputs aren’t uploaded to a server, and Clear empties the fields.
Is the average view duration calculator free?
Yes. It’s free with no signup, login or download. Enter watch hours and views, select Calculate and check as many videos as you like.
