How to use this tool

To make a barcode, pick the type, type your number or text, and download it as a print-ready PNG or a scalable SVG. This generator creates scannable Code 128, EAN-13, UPC-A, EAN-8, Code 39 and ITF-14 barcodes for products, shipping boxes, inventory and event badges, calculates retail check digits for you, and updates the preview as you type.

  1. 01

    Choose the barcode type

Pick Code 128 for labels and inventory, EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail products, EAN-8 for small packs, Code 39 for badges and ITF-14 for shipping cartons.

  2. 02

    Enter the data

Type the text or number to encode. For EAN, UPC and ITF-14 you can leave off the last digit and the check digit is calculated automatically. The rule under the fields shows what each type accepts.

  3. 03

    Style and download

Set Bar width (1–6 px), Height (20–400 px), Text and colors, then click PNG for a print-ready image at three times the preview size, or SVG for a vector that scales to any size.

Which barcode type do I need?

• Code 128: letters, digits and symbols, up to 80 characters; compact; shipping labels, inventory, assets • EAN-13: 13 digits; retail products sold worldwide • UPC-A: 12 digits; retail products in the US and Canada • EAN-8: 8 digits; small packages • Code 39: A–Z, 0–9 and a few symbols, up to 40 characters; ID badges, industry • ITF-14: 14 digits; outer cartons of retail goods

Getting real product numbers

Retail barcodes use numbers assigned to your company by GS1, the standards body behind UPC and EAN, and stores and marketplaces such as Amazon check them. Once you have your GS1 numbers, create the barcode images here. For internal use, like stock rooms, libraries, events or creator merch inventory, encode any number or text you like.

Printing tips

• Dark bars on a light background scan best: black, navy or dark green on white • Keep the white margin around the code (the quiet zone) clear • Use SVG in print layouts so bars stay sharp at any size • Test a printout with a phone scanner app before printing a large batch

Frequently asked questions

How do I generate a barcode?

1. Choose the barcode type. 2. Enter the data to encode. 3. Adjust size and colors. 4. Click PNG or SVG to download.

Are these barcodes scannable?

Yes. They follow the published symbol specifications, including check digits and quiet zones. Test a printout with your scanner before printing in bulk.

What is a check digit?

The last digit of EAN, UPC and ITF-14 codes, calculated from the others so scanners can catch reading errors. Leave it off and it’s added for you; if you type one, the generator verifies it.

Can I make a UPC barcode for Amazon?

Yes. Enter the GS1-assigned UPC or EAN for your product, choose UPC-A or EAN-13, and download the image for your packaging or labels.

What’s the difference between UPC and EAN?

UPC-A has 12 digits and is used mainly in North America; EAN-13 has 13 and is used worldwide. A UPC-A is an EAN-13 that starts with 0.

Which type should I use for inventory labels?

Code 128. It encodes letters, digits and symbols and makes compact barcodes.

PNG or SVG?

SVG is a vector file that stays sharp at any size, ideal for print layouts. PNG is a high-resolution image, three times the preview size, for documents and labels.

Can I change the colors?

Yes. Set the Bars and Background colors; dark bars on a light background give the most reliable scans.

Can I make a QR code here?

This tool makes 1D barcodes. For QR codes, use the SocQ social media QR code generator.

Is the barcode generator free?

Yes. No signup, no watermark and no limit. Barcodes are created in your browser.
