How to use this tool

Every platform cuts text at a different length, and a caption that fits Instagram can be far too long for an X post or a TikTok bio. Paste your text once and this counter checks it against 16 common fields side by side, with how many characters are left or how far over you are. Emoji and accented letters count as one character, the way most apps count them, and the X row uses X’s own weighted count.

  1. 01

    Paste your text

Add a caption, bio, video title, description or post. Line breaks, emoji and hashtags are all counted.

  2. 02

    Check each platform

Every row shows the count, the platform limit and the characters left. A row turns red and shows how far over you are when the text is too long.

  3. 03

    Trim and publish

Shorten the text until the field you need is green, then copy it into the app. The X row follows X’s weighted rules for links and emoji.

Character limits used by this counter

• X post: 280 (25,000 with X Premium) • Instagram caption: 2,200 · Instagram bio: 150 • TikTok caption: 4,000 in the app · TikTok bio: 80 • YouTube title: 100 · YouTube description: 5,000 • LinkedIn post: 3,000 · LinkedIn headline: 220 • Facebook post: 63,206 · Threads post: 500 · Bluesky post: 300 • Pinterest Pin title: 100 · Pin description: 500 Each row compares your text with that field’s published limit, so one paste checks every platform.

Hard limits and display limits

A hard limit is the point where the app stops accepting text, such as 280 on X. A display limit is where text is cut off in the feed or search results even though it is saved in full. Instagram folds captions after about 125 characters and Google shortens titles around 60 characters, which is why the Google title and meta description rows are marked as display guides.

How characters are counted

The counter counts what you see: an emoji, a flag or an accented letter is one character, and a line break is one character, which matches how most apps count. X weights its count: every link counts as 23 characters and most emoji count as 2, so the X row follows X’s official counting rules.

Write for the first line

On most platforms only the first line or two appear before “more”. Put the hook or key information in the first 100 characters, move hashtags to the end, and keep links short. Use the word counter if you also need reading time or word-level statistics.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can an Instagram caption have?

Up to 2,200 characters. Only about the first 125 show in the feed before “more”, so lead with the most important words.

What is the TikTok caption character limit?

TikTok allows up to 4,000 characters when you post in the app. If you schedule posts through a third-party tool, aim for 2,200 or fewer, the limit many schedulers use.

Does the character counter count spaces?

Yes. Platforms count spaces and line breaks toward their limits, so the counter includes them too. The total above the list shows the full count.

How are emoji counted?

Each emoji counts as one character, including emoji made of several parts such as family or flag emoji. On X, most emoji count as two characters, which the X row reflects.

Why does the X row show a different number?

X weights characters: links always count as 23, emoji usually as 2, and many CJK characters as 2. The X row uses X’s published counting rules, so it can differ from the plain count.

What is the Instagram bio limit?

An Instagram bio can have up to 150 characters. Your name field is separate and allows up to 30 characters.

How long can a YouTube title and description be?

A YouTube title can have up to 100 characters and a description up to 5,000. Search results usually show about the first 60 to 70 characters of a title.

What does “display guide” mean?

Those rows aren’t hard limits. Google doesn’t reject long titles or meta descriptions, but it usually shortens titles past about 60 characters and descriptions past about 160.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The text is counted in your browser and isn’t sent to SocQ or saved. Clear the box or close the page to remove it.

Is the character counter free?

Yes. It’s free with no signup and no usage limit.

For developers

Analyze caption length across public posts

SocQ APIs return public posts from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn with their captions and engagement, so you can compare caption length with performance across many accounts instead of checking posts one at a time.
