How to use this tool

Instagram now allows only five hashtags per post or Reel, so an extra or repeated tag matters more than it used to. Paste a caption or a block of tags to see the total count, how many are unique and which ones appear twice, even when the capitalization differs. You also get a deduplicated list ready to copy.

  1. 01

    Paste your caption

Paste a full caption or a list of tags into Caption or hashtag list. Regular text, emoji and line breaks can stay; only words that start with # are counted.

  2. 02

    Create result

Click Create result to see Total hashtags, Unique hashtags and Repeated hashtags. Tags that differ only in capitalization, like #Coffee and #coffee, count as one unique tag.

  3. 03

    Copy the clean list

Below the counts, each unique tag appears once in the spelling you used first. Copy the result or use Download TXT, then trim it to the limit of the platform you’re posting on.

How the counter recognizes a hashtag

• A tag starts with # and continues through letters, numbers and underscores in any language • A space, punctuation mark, emoji or hyphen ends the tag, so #self-care counts as #self • A # attached to a word, such as abc#tag, isn’t counted • A # on its own is ignored • Tags made only of digits, like #2026, are counted

Instagram’s 5-hashtag limit

In December 2025 Instagram announced a cap of five hashtags per post and Reel, down from 30. Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, has said hashtags help classify a post rather than increase its reach. Use the counter to check the total, then keep the five tags that describe the content most precisely, such as a topic tag, a niche tag and your branded tag. The counter doesn’t enforce the limit or remove tags for you.

Clean up a hashtag list before posting

• Remove repeats; the clean list already keeps each tag once • Check spelling, since #ceramic and #ceramics are different tags • Use CamelCase, such as #HandmadeMugs, so screen readers pronounce the words correctly • Drop broad tags like #love that say little about the post • Keep your branded tag identical across every post

What the counter doesn’t check

It counts tags only. It doesn’t look up how popular a hashtag is, flag restricted tags or measure caption length, so check those separately in the app or with a character counter.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hashtag counter?

A hashtag counter finds every hashtag in a piece of text and tells you how many there are. This one also groups tags that differ only in capitalization, lists repeats and gives you a deduplicated copy. It’s handy for checking a caption against a platform’s hashtag limit before posting.

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?

Five per post or Reel. Instagram announced the cap in December 2025, replacing the old limit of 30, and applied it to accounts gradually. If Instagram won’t let you publish a caption, count your tags here and remove the extras.

How do I count hashtags in a caption?

1. Copy your caption from your notes or scheduling tool. 2. Paste it into Caption or hashtag list. 3. Click Create result. 4. Read Total hashtags and Unique hashtags, and check Repeated hashtags for duplicates.

Are #Ceramics and #ceramics the same hashtag?

The counter treats them as one unique tag, because hashtag search on the major platforms isn’t case-sensitive. Both still add to Total hashtags, since each copy takes a slot in your caption. The clean list keeps whichever spelling appeared first.

Does it count hashtags in Chinese, Japanese or other languages?

Yes. Letters and numbers from any script count, so tags like #陶瓷 or #コーヒー are recognized. A tag ends at a space or punctuation mark, including full-width punctuation such as “,”.

Why wasn’t one of my hashtags counted?

Check what comes right before and inside the tag. A # attached to a letter or number, as in word#tag, isn’t counted, and a hyphen, apostrophe or emoji cuts the tag short. Add a space before the # and remove symbols inside the tag.

Does it check for banned hashtags?

No. The counter doesn’t connect to Instagram or any other platform, so it can’t tell whether a tag is restricted or how many posts use it. Search the tag in the app before you rely on it.

Can I use the clean list on other platforms?

Yes. The list is plain text separated by spaces, so you can paste it into Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn or YouTube. Each platform has its own rules on how many tags make sense, so trim the list to suit where you’re posting.

Is my caption uploaded?

No. Hashtags are counted in your browser, and your caption isn’t sent to SocQ or saved. Refreshing the page clears the text and the result.

Is the hashtag counter free?

Yes. It’s free with no signup or account, and there’s no limit on how many captions you check. Run it on every draft before you schedule or publish.

For developers

See which hashtags public posts use

SocQ APIs fetch public posts and profiles from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn, including captions, so you can review the hashtags used in public content at scale. Reach and impressions for your own posts still come from each platform’s analytics.
