How to use this tool
Sending a folder of loose files makes photo selection slow, and “the third one from the left” is easy to misread. This contact sheet generator arranges up to 20 photos in a grid and labels each one with a number and its file name, all in a single 1800 × 1800 PNG. Photographers, social media managers and small teams use it to shortlist shots for a shoot, campaign or post.
- 01
Upload and order the photos
Click Choose files and select up to 20 JPG, PNG or WebP images. Use the up arrow beside a file to change the order; the numbers on the sheet follow this list.
- 02
Set the grid
Enter 1–6 in Columns and 0–100 in Spacing (px), then pick a Background color. Labels are drawn in light cream text, so a darker background keeps them easy to read.
- 03
Check the labels and download
Confirm each file name is legible in the live preview, which updates as you edit. Then click Download to save the PNG and share it with your reviewer.
How to set up a contact sheet that’s easy to review
A good sheet lets someone reply with a number instead of a description. • Rename files before uploading, such as “mug-front.jpg”, because the label shows the file name • Order photos the way you want them discussed, such as by scene or product • Use 4–5 columns for 16–20 photos so the cells stay closer to the shape of your photos • Keep the background dark, since labels are always drawn in light text
What the sheet includes, and its limits
• Up to 20 photos per sheet; split larger shoots into several sheets • A number and file name under every photo, in small 20 px text • Long file names are squeezed to fit the cell width • Each photo is cropped from the center to fill its cell, so check full frames before the final pick • Output is a single 1800 × 1800 PNG, not a multi-page PDF
How to use the sheet with clients and teammates
• Send the PNG by chat or email and ask for picks by number, such as “3, 7 and 12” • Attach it to a content brief or shot list so everyone reviews the same set • Keep a copy in the shoot folder as a visual index Because photos are cropped in the grid, share the originals for final approval.
Frequently asked questions
What is a contact sheet generator?
A contact sheet generator turns a set of photos into a single overview image. SocQ’s version places up to 20 photos in a grid and prints a number and the file name under each one, so people can review and choose shots quickly.
What is a contact sheet in photography?
The term comes from the darkroom, where strips of negatives were pressed against photo paper to print every frame at actual size. A digital contact sheet does the same job today: it shows a whole shoot as numbered thumbnails for culling, client proofing and filing.
How do I make a contact sheet?
1. Click Choose files and select up to 20 photos. 2. Reorder them with the up arrows so the numbering matches your review order. 3. Set Columns, Spacing (px) and Background. 4. Check the live preview, then click Download to save the PNG.
How is a contact sheet different from a photo collage?
A contact sheet is a working document: every photo gets a number and file name so reviewers can refer to it precisely. A collage is a finished visual meant for sharing, without labels. SocQ’s Photo Collage Maker uses the same grid controls if you want the unlabeled version.
How many photos fit on one contact sheet?
Up to 20 photos per sheet. For bigger shoots, create several sheets in batches of 20, and add a prefix such as “A-01” to file names, since the numbering restarts at 1 on every sheet.
Can I export the contact sheet as a PDF?
No. The tool exports a PNG image, which is easy to send by chat or email and opens on any device. If you need a printable PDF, open the PNG and use your system’s print dialog to print it or save it as PDF.
Can I add star ratings or camera settings to the labels?
No. Each label shows only the photo’s number and file name, and EXIF data such as camera settings, dates or ratings isn’t read or printed. Put short notes in your file names if reviewers need extra context.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Your browser builds the sheet on your own device, so the photos and file names aren’t sent to SocQ’s servers. Clearing the page or closing the tab discards them.
Is the contact sheet generator free?
Yes. You can create and download contact sheets without an account, and the PNG has no SocQ logo or watermark. Make as many sheets as your shoot needs.
Why do the thumbnails look cropped?
Each photo is scaled to cover its cell and trimmed from the center. That keeps the grid even but can hide edges, especially when you mix portrait and landscape shots. Change the column count to reshape the cells, and confirm final picks against the full-size originals.
