How to use this tool
A campaign summary tells you total spend and total clicks, but not always a clean cost per click for the exact date range or ad set you care about. This calculator divides the two and shows the average CPC along with the equation. It helps advertisers, freelancers and shop owners compare campaigns, check invoices and plan bids.
- 01
Enter your ad spend
Type the total spent in the Ad spend field as a plain number. The result uses the same currency, so 500 dollars gives a dollar CPC and 500 yuan gives a yuan CPC.
- 02
Enter the clicks
Add the clicks that spend paid for in the Clicks field. Use the same date range and click type, such as link clicks, for every campaign you compare.
- 03
Calculate and compare
Press Calculate to see the cost per result and the equation, like 500 ÷ 250. Change one number to test a scenario, then use Copy to save the figures.
CPC formula with a worked example
CPC = total ad spend ÷ total clicks. Spend $500 and get 250 clicks: 500 ÷ 250 = $2.00 per click. If the next campaign spends $400 for the same 250 clicks, its CPC drops to $1.60. This is your average CPC; the amount charged for individual clicks can be higher or lower.
What is a good cost per click?
A good CPC is one your conversion rate and margin can support, so benchmarks only give context. Published averages disagree, but they consistently show Google search clicks costing a few dollars on average, competitive fields such as legal and finance costing far more, and many social ad clicks costing less. Your own history on the same platform is the most useful comparison.
How to lower CPC
• Improve ad relevance: on Google Ads, a higher Quality Score can lower what you pay. • Refresh creative when CTR drops, since engaging ads usually win auctions more cheaply. • Add negative keywords or exclusions to stop paying for irrelevant clicks. • Test broader or different audiences if a small audience is getting expensive. • Shift budget toward placements and hours with a lower CPC and steady conversions.
CPC vs. CPM and CPA
CPM is the cost of 1,000 impressions, CPC is the cost of one click and CPA is the cost of one conversion. They are linked: CPA = CPC ÷ conversion rate, so a $2 CPC with a 5% conversion rate means a $40 CPA. A cheap click that never converts can cost more in the end than an expensive one that does.
Frequently asked questions
What is CPC?
CPC stands for cost per click: the average amount you pay each time someone clicks your ad. It’s also the name of a bidding model where you’re charged per click rather than per impression. In reports, average CPC is total spend divided by total clicks.
How do you calculate cost per click?
1. Take total ad spend for a campaign and date range. 2. Take the clicks from the same campaign and range. 3. Divide spend by clicks. For $500 and 250 clicks, 500 ÷ 250 = $2.00 per click.
What is a good CPC for ads?
It depends on what a click is worth to you. Work out the most you can pay: if 5% of visitors buy and each sale leaves $60 before ads, a click is worth up to $3. Anything below that ceiling can be profitable, whatever the industry average says.
Why is my CPC so high?
Common causes are a small or highly contested audience, low ad relevance, tired creative with falling CTR, and seasonal peaks when many advertisers bid at once. Check whether CTR dropped before CPC rose; if it did, new creative is usually the first fix.
Does this calculator convert currencies?
No. It divides the numbers you type and returns the result in the same currency. If campaigns ran in different currencies, convert spend to one currency first so the CPCs are comparable.
How do I calculate CPC from CPM and CTR?
Divide CPM by 1,000 to get the cost per impression, then divide by CTR as a decimal. For example, a $10 CPM with a 1% CTR gives 0.01 ÷ 0.01 = $1.00 per click. If you have real spend and click totals, entering them here is more accurate.
Is average CPC the same as max CPC?
No. Max CPC is the most you allow a platform to charge for one click in an auction. Average CPC is what you actually paid across all clicks, which is often lower than your max bid.
Should I count all clicks or link clicks?
Use link clicks when you want the cost of sending people to your site or app. On some platforms all clicks include likes, profile taps and expansions, which makes CPC look cheaper. Pick one and keep it the same across campaigns.
Does the calculator store or upload my spend data?
No. The division happens in your browser, and the spend and click numbers you enter aren’t sent to SocQ or saved. Refreshing or closing the page clears them.
Is this CPC calculator free to use?
Yes, it’s free with no account or signup. You can run as many calculations as you like and copy each result into your report or spreadsheet.
For developers
Pair CPC with public social data
Use SocQ APIs to collect public posts, profiles and comments from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn for your campaign reports, so you can see how people responded to the content behind each CPC. Spend and click data still come from your ad account exports.
