How to use this tool

Video platforms count and bill views differently, so a single cost per view figure helps you compare creatives and placements on equal terms. This calculator divides your spend by the views you enter and returns CPV with the equation, showing up to three decimal places. It’s made for video advertisers, creators promoting their channels and teams planning awareness campaigns.

  1. 01

    Enter ad spend

Type the total spent on the video campaign in Ad spend, using numbers only. The CPV comes out in the same currency.

  2. 02

    Enter views

In Views, enter the views from the same report. Use one definition, such as YouTube views or 6-second views on TikTok, for every ad you compare.

  3. 03

    Calculate and copy

Press Calculate to see the cost per result and the equation, like 500 ÷ 100000. The result shows up to three decimals, and Copy puts it on your clipboard.

CPV formula with a worked example

CPV = total video ad spend ÷ total views. $500 for 100,000 views gives 500 ÷ 100,000 = $0.005 per view. Flip it to plan: at that rate, a goal of 40,000 views needs about $200, and a $1,000 budget buys about 200,000 views.

What counts as a view?

Each platform sets its own threshold. On YouTube, a view is generally counted when someone watches 30 seconds of a skippable ad (or the whole ad if it’s shorter) or interacts with it. Other platforms also report shorter plays, such as 2-, 3- or 6-second views, plus completed views. Write the definition next to every CPV you share, or the comparison won’t hold.

What is a good CPV?

Published YouTube benchmarks commonly fall between a few cents and about $0.30 per view, and they shift with audience, targeting, format and season. A lower CPV isn’t automatically better: a cheap view that ends after two seconds does less than a slightly pricier one that holds attention. Compare against your own past campaigns that used the same view definition.

How to lower CPV

• Hook viewers in the first few seconds so more people reach the view threshold. • Test shorter edits for platforms that count short plays. • Broaden targeting if a narrow audience is driving up auction prices. • Pause placements with high CPV and low watch time. • Track view rate and average watch time alongside CPV.

Frequently asked questions

What is CPV?

CPV means cost per view: the average amount you pay each time your video ad records a counted view. It’s also a bidding model on YouTube, where you’re charged when a view is counted. Calculated from a report, CPV is spend divided by views.

How do you calculate cost per view?

1. Take total spend for the video campaign. 2. Take the views counted in the same period, using one view definition. 3. Divide spend by views. For $500 and 100,000 views, 500 ÷ 100,000 = $0.005.

What is a good cost per view on YouTube?

Most published figures land somewhere from a few cents to roughly 30 cents per view. Broad awareness audiences tend to sit at the low end, and competitive B2B or finance audiences at the high end. Your own history with the same ad format is the fairest yardstick.

Which view count should I enter?

Use the view metric that matches your campaign goal, such as YouTube views or ThruPlays on Meta, and use the same metric for every ad you compare. Mixing 3-second plays with 30-second views makes CPVs look very different for the same performance.

Why does my result show 0?

Results show up to three decimal places, so a CPV below 0.0005 rounds to 0. To read very small CPVs, multiply your spend by 1,000 before entering it; the result is then your cost per 1,000 views.

What is the difference between CPV and CPM?

CPM is the cost of 1,000 impressions, whether or not anyone watched. CPV is the cost of one counted view, so you pay for it only when people watch past the threshold. Campaigns aimed at views are usually judged on CPV, and reach-focused ones on CPM.

Is a low CPV always good?

No. Very cheap views can come from placements where people watch briefly and move on. Check average watch time, completion rate and what viewers do next before shifting budget to the cheapest option.

Can I use it for influencer or creator deals?

Yes. Enter the fee you paid as Ad spend and the views the sponsored video received to get an effective CPV. That lets you compare a flat creator fee with paid video ads on the same basis.

Does the CPV calculator upload my data?

No. The division runs in your browser, and the spend and view numbers you enter aren’t sent to SocQ or saved after you leave the page.

Is the CPV calculator free?

Yes. It’s free with no signup or account and no limit on calculations, so you can compare as many videos, creators and placements as you need.

For developers

Bring public video data into CPV reports

SocQ APIs return public posts, profiles and comments from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn, so you can review the public videos and audience comments behind each CPV in one report. Paid view and spend data still come from your ad account.
