How to use this tool

Duotone images, with two colors mapped across a photo’s dark and light areas, give campaign graphics, playlist covers and quote cards a striking, unified style. This tool converts your photo’s brightness into a blend between a shadow color and a highlight color you choose, then exports it at the original size (JPG stays JPG, other formats save as PNG). It’s useful for creators and brand teams who want a consistent look across very different photos.

  1. 01

    Upload your photo

Click Choose files and pick a JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF photo; add up to 20 to give a whole set the same treatment.

  2. 02

    Choose shadow and highlight colors

Use the Shadow color picker for the darkest parts and the Highlight color picker for the brightest. A dark color paired with a light one keeps the most detail.

  3. 03

    Check the result and download

The result updates as you pick colors. Compare faces and edges in the preview, then click Download or Download ZIP.

Where duotone images work well

• Campaign and event graphics that need one look across many photos • Podcast, playlist or YouTube thumbnails • Quote cards and speaker announcements on LinkedIn • Website headers and Instagram highlight covers

How the two colors are applied

• Each pixel’s brightness is measured first • Black areas take the shadow color and white areas the highlight color • Everything in between blends smoothly between the two • Original hues are discarded; only light and dark carry over • Transparent areas stay transparent

Tips for a strong duotone

• Pair a dark shadow color with a light highlight color for clear detail • Two similar colors flatten the image into a single tint • Swap the two colors for an inverted, poster-style look • Use your brand colors and keep them the same across a series

Frequently asked questions

What is a duotone image?

A duotone image is a photo recolored with just two colors: one for the shadows and one for the highlights, with midtones blending between them. The style is popular for posters, album art and social graphics because it unifies very different photos.

How do I make a duotone image online for free?

1. Click Choose files and pick your photo. 2. Choose a Shadow color. 3. Choose a Highlight color. 4. Check the live result and click Download to save the image.

Which colors work best for duotone?

Pick one dark and one light color so the photo keeps its contrast, such as navy with cream or purple with yellow. Two colors of similar brightness make details hard to see. Brand colors often work well when one of them is clearly darker.

Can I swap the colors to invert the effect?

Yes. Put the light color in Shadow color and the dark one in Highlight color. Dark areas of the photo then turn light and bright areas turn dark, which gives a negative, poster-like result.

Does the duotone effect keep the original size?

Yes. The result has the same width and height as your photo, and transparent areas in a PNG source stay transparent. Only the colors change.

Is it free, with no watermark?

Yes. It’s free with no signup, and the exported image doesn’t carry any SocQ logo or watermark. You can process as many photos as you need.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The color mapping runs on a canvas in your browser and the result is created on your device. Your photos aren’t sent to SocQ.

What formats and file sizes are supported?

You can open JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF images up to 30 MB and 40 megapixels each. A JPG is saved as a JPG at 90% quality and other formats as PNG. Large photos can take a few seconds because every pixel is recolored.

Can I apply the same duotone to many photos?

Yes. Select up to 20 photos and each one gets the same shadow and highlight colors. It’s a quick way to make mixed photos look like one set, and Download ZIP saves them together.

Are there contrast, intensity or preset controls?

No. The tool has only the two color pickers, with no presets, contrast slider or blend strength. For a softer look, pick colors that are closer in brightness; for more punch, push them further apart.
