FLAC vs MP3
FLAC compresses audio losslessly, like a ZIP file for sound, and typically takes 50–60% of the size of a WAV. MP3 keeps the sounds people hear and takes about 10–20% of a WAV. FLAC is ideal for archiving and hi-fi listening; MP3 is ideal for phones, cars, USB sticks and sharing.
Is 320 kbps MP3 as good as FLAC?
For most listeners on most equipment, a 320 kbps MP3 is very hard to tell apart from the FLAC in a blind test, which is why 320 kbps is the go-to choice for music. A smart workflow: keep your FLAC library as the master copy and convert MP3 copies for your phone, car and everyday players.
Hi-res FLAC and the car or phone
24-bit FLAC at 48, 96 or 192 kHz is converted to 44.1 kHz stereo MP3, which covers the full range of human hearing and plays on every device. Multichannel FLAC is mixed to stereo. For a lossless copy in another format, the audio converter also saves WAV.
