How to use this tool

A GIF is a series of frames, so cropping it means cutting the same rectangle out of every frame. Here you drag a box on the animated GIF to choose that rectangle, or describe it with four percentages that work on GIFs of any size, and SocQ exports the cropped animation as a new looping GIF.

  1. 01

    Choose a GIF

Click Choose files and select a GIF up to 100 MB and 60 seconds long, or click Example to load a 320 × 180 test animation.

  2. 02

Drag the crop box or set percentages

The GIF appears under the upload row; drag a box on it to choose the area to keep, and everything outside the box is dimmed. For exact values, Area width and Area height set the crop size as a share of the frame, and Horizontal position and Vertical position place its top-left corner.

  3. 03

    Create file and review

Click Create file and watch the whole loop in the result. If a moving subject slips out of the crop, enlarge or shift the area and run it again.

How the crop percentages work

All four values are percentages of the original GIF, so they adapt to any size: • Area width and Area height: 50% of a 400 px wide GIF is 200 px • Horizontal position: how far the crop’s left edge sits from the left side • Vertical position: how far the crop’s top edge sits from the top • If the area would run past an edge, the tool shifts it back inside the frame

Common crops and the values to use

• Square avatar or emoji from a 16:9 GIF: Area width 56.25%, Area height 100%, Horizontal position 21.88% to center it • Vertical 9:16 from a 16:9 GIF: Area width about 31.6%, Area height 100% • Trim the sides: Horizontal position 5%, Area width 90% and Area height 100% remove 5% from the left and right • Focus on a detail: pick a small area, then enlarge the result with a GIF resizer

What to check before downloading

The crop stays fixed while the content moves, so play the full loop. Leave extra room for anything that travels across the frame, and watch for text near the edge being cut off. The output uses a fresh 128-color palette and keeps the original timing.

Limits and privacy

• One GIF per run, up to 100 MB, 60 seconds and 4 million pixels per frame • Drag a box on the GIF to select the area, or type the four values for exact numbers • Cropping runs in your browser with FFmpeg, so the GIF isn’t uploaded; the engine downloads once on first use

Frequently asked questions

What is a GIF cropper?

A GIF cropper cuts away the parts of an animation you don’t need and keeps one rectangle from every frame. The result is a smaller frame that still plays, which is useful for removing borders, focusing on a subject or making a square.

How do I crop a GIF?

1. Click Choose files and pick your GIF. 2. Drag a box on the GIF over the part you want to keep. 3. For exact values, enter Area width, Area height and the two position fields (%). 4. Click Create file, check the loop and click Download.

Does the crop apply to every frame?

Yes. The same rectangle is cut from each frame at the same position. It doesn’t follow moving objects, so choose an area big enough to hold the motion for the whole loop.

How do I crop a GIF to a square?

Divide the GIF’s height by its width to get the Area width percentage, and set Area height to 100%. For a 16:9 GIF that’s 56.25%. Then set Horizontal position to 21.88% to center the square, or lower or raise it to slide left or right.

Is my GIF uploaded to a server?

No. Cropping happens inside your browser tab with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The GIF stays on your device, and SocQ never receives a copy of it.

Is the GIF cropper free and watermark-free?

Yes. The cropper is free to use without an account, and the downloaded GIF carries no watermark, logo or added border on any frame.

Can I drag a box to select the crop area?

Yes. After you add a GIF, the animation appears under the upload row; drag a box on it and everything outside the box is dimmed. The four percentage fields still work, which makes it easy to reuse exact values on several GIFs.

Will cropping reduce the GIF’s quality?

The pixels you keep aren’t scaled, so sharpness stays the same. Each frame does get a new 128-color palette, which can slightly change gradients and photo-like areas. The file usually gets smaller because there are fewer pixels to store.

What are the cropper’s limits?

Each GIF can be up to 100 MB, 60 seconds long and 4 million pixels per frame. Area width and Area height accept 1–100%, and the two positions accept 0–100%. One GIF is cropped per run.

Can I crop and resize a GIF at the same time?

This tool only crops, so the area you keep stays at its original pixel size. To make it bigger or smaller, open the cropped GIF in a GIF resizer and enter a new width.
