How to use this tool
Every GIF frame carries a delay that says how long it stays on screen, and those delays set the animation’s speed. This tool multiplies the playback speed by the value you enter, retimes every frame and exports a new looping GIF.
- 01
Choose a GIF
Click Choose files and select a GIF up to 100 MB and 60 seconds long, or click Example to load the 320 × 180 test animation.
- 02
Enter the Speed multiplier
Type a value from 0.25 to 4. Use 2 for double speed, 0.5 for half speed and 1 to keep the original pace.
- 03
Create file and compare
Click Create file, then play gif-speed.gif next to your original. If the motion feels rushed or sluggish, change the multiplier and run it again.
How GIF speed works
• Frame: one still image in the animation • Frame delay: how long a frame stays visible, stored in hundredths of a second • Speeding up shortens every delay, and slowing down lengthens it • Speed alone doesn’t add or remove frames; small size changes come from the rebuilt 128-color palette
Picking a multiplier
• 0.25–0.5: slow motion for tutorials, product details or reaction GIFs • 0.75–1.5: gentle tweaks to match a caption or a beat • 2–4: fast-forward for long screen recordings and time-lapses • Length changes in proportion: a 6-second GIF at 2× lasts about 3 seconds
Very fast and very slow GIFs
GIF timing is stored in steps of 0.01 seconds, so new delays are rounded. Many browsers display delays of 0.01 seconds or less at roughly 0.1 seconds, which can make an extreme speed-up look slower than expected. Slowing down doesn’t create in-between frames, so heavy slowdowns of low-frame-rate GIFs can look choppy.
Limits and privacy
• One GIF per run, up to 100 MB, 60 seconds and 4 million pixels per frame • Speed multiplier accepts 0.25 to 4 • Processing runs in your browser with FFmpeg, so the GIF isn’t uploaded; the engine downloads on first use
Frequently asked questions
What is a GIF speed changer?
A GIF speed changer adjusts how long each frame of an animated GIF stays on screen. Shorter delays make the animation run faster and longer delays slow it down, while the images themselves stay the same.
How do I change the speed of a GIF?
1. Click Choose files and pick the GIF. 2. Enter a Speed multiplier between 0.25 and 4. 3. Click Create file. 4. Play the result and click Download when the pace looks right.
How do I slow down a GIF?
Enter a multiplier below 1. A value of 0.5 plays at half speed and doubles the length, and 0.25 plays four times slower. Slowing a GIF that has only a few frames can make the motion look jumpy.
How do I speed up a GIF?
Enter a multiplier above 1, such as 2 for double speed or 4 for four times faster. The loop gets shorter in proportion. Test the result in the app you’ll post to, because very short frame delays may be shown more slowly.
Will changing the speed affect quality or file size?
Frames aren’t resized or removed, so detail stays the same. Each frame is re-encoded with a 128-color palette, which can shift the file size slightly either way. To make a file noticeably smaller, reduce its width or frame rate instead.
Is my GIF uploaded to a server?
No. FFmpeg retimes the GIF inside your browser tab, and the file never leaves your device. The page only downloads the engine files the first time you run it.
Is the GIF speed changer free, with no watermark?
Yes. There’s no sign-up, no watermark and no cap on how many speeds you try, so you can compare several versions before choosing one.
Why does my sped-up GIF look slower in some apps?
GIF delays are stored in hundredths of a second, and many browsers and apps raise delays of 0.01 seconds or less to about 0.1 seconds. If your result hits that floor, use a smaller multiplier or lower the frame rate with a GIF compressor.
What are the speed changer’s limits?
The source GIF can be up to 100 MB, 60 seconds long and 4 million pixels per frame. The multiplier accepts any value from 0.25 to 4, including decimals such as 1.5. One GIF is processed per run.
Can I reverse a GIF and change its speed?
This page only changes speed. To play a GIF backwards as well, run it through a reverse GIF tool first, then load the reversed file here and set the multiplier.
