How to use this tool
A GIF stores every frame as a separate image with at most 256 colors, while MP4 records mainly what changes between frames, so the same animation often takes far less space as video. Choose a GIF, pick a background for any transparent areas, and SocQ converts one full loop to MP4 in your browser.
- 01
Choose an animated GIF
Click Choose files and select a GIF up to 100 MB, or click Example to load the 320 × 180 test animation.
- 02
Pick the Background color
MP4 has no transparency, so this color fills any see-through pixels. The default is dark teal (#233b45); choose white or black to match where the video will appear.
- 03
Create file and download
Click Create file. The MP4 plays in the result panel at 25 frames per second; check the timing, then click Download.
Why convert a GIF to MP4
• Smaller files: video codecs store frame-to-frame changes instead of whole images • Full color: MP4 isn’t limited to a 256-color palette, so gradients band less • Editing: video editors and short-video apps accept MP4 directly • Trade-off: on a web page, an MP4 needs video-tag settings to loop and autoplay the way a GIF does
What the MP4 contains
• H.264 video at 25 frames per second, with no audio track • The GIF’s own width and height, rounded down to even numbers when needed • One complete cycle of the animation, matching the GIF’s total duration • Your Background color wherever the GIF was transparent
Limits and privacy
• One GIF per conversion, up to 100 MB and 10 minutes of animation • The file picker shows .gif files only • Conversion runs in your browser with FFmpeg, and the GIF isn’t uploaded to SocQ • The first run downloads the video engine; later runs reuse the cached copy
Frequently asked questions
What is a GIF to MP4 converter?
A GIF to MP4 converter re-encodes an animated GIF as a video file. Video compression handles motion more efficiently than GIF’s frame-by-frame images, so the MP4 is usually lighter and plays in any video player or editor.
How do I convert a GIF to MP4?
1. Click Choose files and select your GIF. 2. Change Background if the GIF has transparent areas. 3. Click Create file. 4. Play the MP4 in the result panel, then click Download.
Is my GIF uploaded to a server?
No. FFmpeg converts the file inside your browser tab, and the GIF never leaves your device. The page only fetches the engine files from a CDN, which happens on your first conversion.
Is it free, and is there a watermark?
Yes, it’s free and needs no account. SocQ adds no watermark, logo or branding to the MP4, so you can post or edit it as your own clip.
Why is the MP4 smaller than the GIF?
GIF compresses each frame on its own with a palette of up to 256 colors. H.264 predicts each frame from earlier ones and stores mostly the differences. Animations with large still areas usually shrink the most, while grainy footage gains less.
What happens to transparent parts of the GIF?
MP4 video can’t store transparency, so see-through pixels are filled with the Background color you pick. Choose a color that matches the page, slide or video where the clip will be shown.
Will the MP4 loop like a GIF?
The file holds one full cycle of the animation. Many social apps loop short videos automatically, and in an editor you can repeat the clip. On a website, add the loop, muted and autoplay attributes to the video tag.
Does the MP4 have sound?
No. GIFs carry no audio, so the MP4 is exported without an audio track. Add music or a voiceover afterward in your video editor if the post needs sound.
What are the size and length limits?
Each GIF can be up to 100 MB, and the animation can run up to 10 minutes. The tool converts one file at a time. Long, high-resolution GIFs take noticeably longer on phones than on computers.
Can I post the MP4 on Instagram or TikTok?
Yes. H.264 MP4 is a standard upload format for both apps. Platforms may expect a minimum length or a vertical frame for some placements, so check the requirements in the app before you post.
