How to use this tool

Choose a photo and the tool writes a one-line English description of what it sees. Use that as a starting point, add the details that matter for your post, such as product names or colors, and paste the result into Instagram’s alt text field.

  1. 01

    Choose your photo

Click Choose files or drag in one JPG, PNG or WebP image. There’s no built-in example, so start with the photo you plan to post.

  2. 02

    Create the description

Click Create result. The first run downloads an image captioning model once (about 250 MB), so keep the page open until the English caption appears in the result box.

  3. 03

Edit and add it on Instagram

Correct the draft, add context such as names, colors or text in the image, click Copy, then paste it in Instagram under Advanced settings > Write alt text.

How to add alt text on Instagram

• While posting, tap Advanced settings on the caption screen (called More options in some app versions) • Under Accessibility, tap Write alt text, paste your text and tap Done • For a post that’s already live, tap ⋯, then Edit, then Edit alt text • If you skip this, Instagram may add automatic alt text, which is often vague

What good alt text includes

• The main subject and what it’s doing • The setting, if it adds meaning • Important text that appears in the image • Details that explain why the photo is in the post • No “image of” opener and no hashtags

Limits of the AI draft

• Drafts are English only • One short caption per photo, from a general image captioning model (vit-gpt2) • It can miss small objects, miscount items or misread the scene • It doesn’t read text in the image or know names, brands or places • Always compare the draft with the photo before you post

Privacy and requirements

• The model runs in your browser, so your photo is processed on your device and isn’t uploaded • It runs on WebAssembly rather than WebGPU, so a graphics card isn’t required • The first run downloads the model once (about 250 MB), which can take a while on a slow connection; later runs start right away • Accepted files: one JPG, PNG or WebP image at a time

Frequently asked questions

What is an Instagram alt text generator?

An Instagram alt text generator writes a short description of a photo that screen readers can read aloud to people who can’t see the image. This one creates an English first draft from your photo, which you edit and paste into Instagram.

How do I use the Instagram alt text generator?

1. Click Choose files and pick a JPG, PNG or WebP photo. 2. Click Create result and wait for the caption. 3. Edit the text to add useful details. 4. Click Copy and paste it into Instagram’s alt text field.

Where do I add alt text on Instagram?

When you create a post, tap Advanced settings at the bottom of the caption screen (some versions call it More options), then tap Write alt text under Accessibility. For an existing post, tap ⋯, choose Edit and tap Edit alt text.

Does Instagram add alt text automatically?

Instagram can generate automatic alt text for photos, but it’s often generic and may not mention what matters in the image. Writing your own, or editing a draft from this tool, gives screen reader users a clearer picture.

What languages does it support?

The captioning model writes in English only, on both the English and Chinese pages. If your audience reads another language, translate the edited draft before you paste it into Instagram.

How accurate is the alt text?

It’s a general captioning model, so it handles clear, simple photos best and can miss small details, miscount objects or describe a scene too broadly. It doesn’t read text in the image or recognize specific people or brands. Check the draft against the photo every time.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The model runs in your browser, so the photo is processed on your own device and isn’t sent to SocQ. Your browser downloads the model files (about 250 MB) once, the first time you use the tool, and reuses them later.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

Yes, it’s free and needs no signup. You don’t have to connect Instagram; you copy the text and add it to your post yourself, as many times as you like.

Can I create alt text for several photos at once?

No, each run handles one photo. For a carousel, run each image separately and paste each description into its matching slide when you write alt text in Instagram.

What makes good alt text for Instagram?

Good alt text describes what someone would miss if they couldn’t see the photo: the subject, what’s happening and any important text. Keep it to a sentence or two, skip phrases like “picture of,” and add context that explains why the photo is in the post.
