How to use this tool
Making a quick meme shouldn’t mean signing up for a design app or digging through a cluttered template library. This meme generator takes one photo you choose, adds the classic all-caps captions at the top and bottom with a dark outline, and gives you a PNG in the photo’s own shape to post or send. It suits group chats, community managers and brands that want a fast reaction image.
- 01
Upload your photo
Click Choose files and pick one JPG, PNG or WebP image. The tool keeps the photo’s shape and scales it so the longer side is 1200 px, so nothing is cropped.
- 02
Write the top and bottom captions
Type the setup in Top caption and the punchline in Bottom caption; letters are switched to capitals automatically. Change the text color if the default cream blends into your photo.
- 03
Check the preview and download the PNG
Check the live preview to make sure each caption fits within three lines. Then click Download to save the meme.
How to write a meme that reads at a glance
Classic memes split the joke in two: a setup on top and a punchline below. Short lines are easier to read in a feed or chat. • Aim for a few words per caption; each one wraps to a maximum of three lines and anything longer is cut off • Choose a photo with a clear face, object or reaction near the center • Leave the bottom caption empty when the joke works as a single line
Meme text style and image size rules
The tool uses the familiar meme look so captions stay readable over busy photos. • Captions use Impact when your device has it installed, with Arial as the fallback • Latin letters are converted to capitals, centered and drawn with a dark outline • The text color is adjustable; the outline always stays dark • Caption size scales with the picture, about 6.5% of its width, and is smaller on very wide photos so both captions fit • Photos keep their shape: the longer side becomes 1200 px (16:9 → 1200 × 675, 3:4 portrait → 900 × 1200), so nothing is cropped
Where to use your finished meme
The PNG keeps your photo’s shape, so it works almost anywhere. • Group chats in WhatsApp, Slack, Discord or iMessage • Instagram, Facebook and X posts • Community updates and lighthearted brand content Only use photos you own or have permission to use, and don’t turn images of real people into jokes without their consent.
Frequently asked questions
What is a meme generator?
A meme generator places short captions over an image to create a shareable joke. SocQ’s version works with a photo you upload: it adds bold, outlined top and bottom text in the classic style and exports a PNG in your photo’s shape that you can post or send.
How do I make a meme with my own picture?
1. Click Choose files and select a JPG, PNG or WebP photo. 2. Type your setup in Top caption and the punchline in Bottom caption. 3. Adjust the text color if needed; the preview updates as you edit. 4. Check the preview and click Download to save the PNG.
Does this meme generator have meme templates?
No. There’s no built-in library of popular meme templates, so you always start from your own image. Save a template picture you have the right to use, upload it, and the tool adds your captions on top.
Is the meme generator free, and does it add a watermark?
It’s free and doesn’t require an account. The exported PNG contains only your photo and captions, with no SocQ logo or watermark stamped on it. You can create as many versions as you like.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The meme is drawn by your browser on your own device, so the photo and captions aren’t sent to SocQ. Clearing the page or closing the tab discards them, and the image is only shared when you post or send the downloaded file.
What font do memes use?
The classic meme font is Impact, a heavy condensed typeface usually shown in white capitals with a black outline. This tool uses Impact when your device has it and falls back to Arial otherwise, keeping the capitals and dark outline either way.
What size is the meme image?
Every meme is exported as a PNG whose longer side is 1200 pixels. The photo keeps its shape, so nothing is cropped: a 16:9 photo becomes 1200 × 675 and a 3:4 portrait becomes 900 × 1200.
Why is part of my caption missing?
Each caption can use up to three lines at a size set by the picture (about 6.5% of its width), and text that needs more room is cut off rather than shrunk. Shorten the wording, split the joke between the top and bottom lines, and the preview updates right away.
Can I make a meme with only top text?
Yes. Once a photo is added, both captions are optional. Leave Bottom caption blank for one-line reactions, and the tool draws only the top text over your photo.
Can I make GIF or video memes?
Not with this tool. It accepts a single still image in JPG, PNG or WebP format and exports a PNG. For moving clips, try SocQ’s Add Text to Video tool and keep the captions short so they read on small screens.
