How to use this tool
Sometimes a blur isn’t enough and you want the clear “this is hidden” look of a mosaic. This tool turns one rectangle on your image into square pixel blocks of the size you choose and exports it at the original dimensions (JPG stays JPG, other formats save as PNG). It suits creators censoring screenshots, sellers hiding labels and anyone sharing photos with bystanders.
- 01
Choose the photo or screenshot
Click Choose files and pick a JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF image. The photo appears under the upload row as the live result, so you can see the area you cover.
- 02
Draw the box and set block size
Drag across the preview, or type the position, width and height in percent. Effect strength is the size of each square block in pixels, from 2 to 100.
- 03
Check, zoom in, download
The mosaic follows your box as you drag. Zoom in to check that nothing inside the box is readable, then click Download or Download ZIP.
When to pixelate instead of blur
• You want viewers to see clearly that something was hidden • Censoring faces, license plates or house numbers in street photos • Covering names and avatars in chat or comment screenshots • Giving one part of an image a retro 8-bit look
Settings explained
• Horizontal / vertical position (%): top-left corner of the box • Area width / height (%): size of the box compared with the image • Effect strength: block size in pixels, kept between 2 and 100 • Larger blocks hide more detail; small blocks only coarsen it
Tips for safe censoring
• Make the box a little larger than the item so edges don’t peek out • Use big blocks for text; small blocks can leave short words guessable • For highly sensitive numbers, crop them out instead • Check the downloaded image at 100% zoom before posting
Frequently asked questions
What is a pixelate image tool?
A pixelate image tool replaces part of a picture with large square blocks, the mosaic effect used to censor faces and text. Here you draw one rectangle, pick a block size and download a copy where only that rectangle is pixelated.
How do I pixelate part of an image for free?
1. Click Choose files and pick your image. 2. Drag a box over the face, plate or text. 3. Set Effect strength to choose the block size. 4. Check the live result and click Download to save the image.
How do I make the pixels bigger?
Raise Effect strength. The value is the width of each block in pixels, so 12 gives roughly 12-pixel squares and 40 gives much chunkier ones. Values are kept within 2–100.
Can pixelation be reversed?
Not by this tool, and large blocks remove most detail. Researchers have shown, though, that short and predictable text under small blocks can sometimes be guessed. Use a big block size, cover the whole item, and crop out anything truly sensitive.
Can I pixelate a whole image?
Yes. Type 0 for both positions and 100 for both area sizes, and the entire picture turns into blocks. It’s a quick way to make a pixel-art style background or a deliberately unreadable preview.
Is it free, with no watermark?
Yes. You don’t need an account, and the exported image carries no SocQ branding or watermark. Use it as often as you need, on desktop or mobile.
Does my image leave my device?
No. Pixelation runs on a canvas in your browser and the result is generated locally. Your image isn’t uploaded to SocQ, which is useful when the picture contains private details.
What formats and sizes are supported?
JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF images up to 30 MB and 40 megapixels each. A JPG is saved as a JPG at 90% quality and other formats as PNG, both at the original width and height; in a PNG the rest of the image keeps its full quality.
Can I pixelate several images or several areas?
You can pixelate up to 20 images at once with the same box, then save them with Download ZIP. Each pass handles one rectangle; for a second area, open the downloaded image again and pixelate the next spot.
Should I blur or pixelate a face?
Both hide identity when the setting is strong enough. Pixelation looks like obvious censoring and is easier to judge at a glance, while blur looks softer and blends into lifestyle photos. Check the result at full size either way.
