How to use this tool

MP4 with H.264 video is the format most phones, editors and social apps accept, so converting a MOV or WebM clip first saves you from failed uploads later. Choose your video, set the quality, and SocQ re-encodes it with FFmpeg running inside your browser tab.

  1. 01

    Choose your video

Click Choose files and pick one MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI or MP4 file up to 100 MB and 10 minutes long, or click Example to load a short test clip.

  2. 02

    Set Quality (%)

Enter a value from 1 to 100. Higher numbers keep more detail and make bigger files; the default of 85 suits most social uploads.

  3. 03

    Create file and download

Click Create file and watch the progress bar. When the MP4 appears in the player, check the sound and motion, then click Download.

What the converter changes in your file

The tool re-encodes picture and sound instead of just renaming the file: • Video: H.264 with 4:2:0 color, the format most players expect • Width and height: rounded down to even numbers, which H.264 requires • Audio: AAC at 128 kbps when the source has a sound track • Fast start: playback data sits at the front, so the MP4 can begin playing before it fully loads • Proportions and duration: unchanged from the original

How to pick a quality value

Quality controls H.264’s CRF setting, where a lower CRF means more detail. • 85 (default): about CRF 19, close to the source for most clips • 100: CRF 16, the largest files, useful for footage you’ll edit again • 50–70: smaller files for quick previews and messaging apps • Below 40: blocky edges and smeared motion become more likely

Limits and supported files

• One video per conversion, up to 100 MB and 10 minutes • The file picker shows video types your browser recognizes, plus .mov, .mkv and .avi • Support depends on the codec inside the file, not only the extension • Each encode stops after 4 minutes, so long high-resolution clips may need trimming first

Privacy and the video engine

Conversion happens on your device with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, and your footage is never sent to SocQ. On the first run the page fetches the engine files from the jsDelivr CDN; afterward your browser cache serves them. A recent laptop converts faster than an older phone.

Frequently asked questions

What is a video to MP4 converter?

A video to MP4 converter rewrites a clip into the MP4 container, usually with H.264 video and AAC audio. This page does it inside your browser, which helps when a phone, editor or social app rejects a MOV, WebM, MKV or AVI file.

How do I convert a video to MP4?

1. Click Choose files and select your video. 2. Leave Quality (%) at 85 or enter another value from 1 to 100. 3. Click Create file and wait for the progress bar to finish. 4. Play the result, then click Download.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. FFmpeg runs in a worker inside this tab, reads the file from your device and writes the MP4 back into browser memory. Only the engine itself is downloaded from a CDN, so the recording stays on your computer or phone.

Is the converter free, and does it add a watermark?

Yes, it’s free and works without an account. SocQ doesn’t add a watermark, logo or end screen, so the MP4 contains only your own footage.

Which formats can I convert to MP4?

The picker accepts common video types such as MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and MP4. Whether a file opens depends on the codec inside it, not just the extension. If you see an error, test a few seconds of the same recording to check support.

What are the file size and length limits?

Each video can be up to 100 MB and 10 minutes long. Files beyond either limit return an error instead of an MP4. For bigger recordings, trim or split them first and convert each part separately.

Will converting to MP4 lower the quality?

Every re-encode loses a little detail, because H.264 is a lossy codec. At the default of 85 the difference is hard to spot on typical social clips. Move the value toward 100 if you plan to edit the MP4 again.

Does the MP4 keep the original sound?

Yes, as long as the source has an audio track. Sound is encoded as AAC at 128 kbps, which plays on phones, browsers and editing apps. Clips recorded without audio produce a silent MP4.

Why does the first conversion take longer?

The first time you click Create file, the page downloads the FFmpeg engine, a large WebAssembly file. Your browser keeps a cached copy, so later conversions start sooner. Encoding speed also depends on your device’s processor.

Why is my MP4 bigger or smaller than the original?

Output size depends on the quality value and on how efficient the original codec was. A phone MOV often shrinks, while an already compressed WebM can grow. Lower the quality value for a smaller file, or raise it to keep more detail.

Work with public social video data

SocQ APIs return public posts, videos and comments from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn, so you can track published content in your own app. They cover public data only, not private account analytics.
