How to use this tool
The webcam recorder asks your browser for camera and microphone access, then records both into one video file. A live preview appears while you record, and the finished take opens in a player so you can check it before saving. It works in desktop browsers and in most phone browsers.
- 01
Click Start recording and allow access
Your browser asks to use your camera and microphone. Choose Allow (or Allow while visiting the site) so the page can see and hear you.

The live preview and red timer appear as soon as recording begins. Look at the lens, speak clearly and finish within 10 minutes.

Stop, replay and download
Click Stop recording. When the player appears, watch the take with sound on, then click Download or record again.
Camera and microphone permissions explained
Browsers never let a page use your camera without asking. • The first time, a prompt asks to allow the camera and microphone; pick Allow • If you clicked Block, use the camera or lock icon in the address bar to change it • The browser’s default camera and mic are used; switch devices in the browser’s site settings • A camera light or recording icon shows while the page is using them
Where it works
• Chrome, Edge and Firefox on computers: saves WebM • Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad: may save MP4 • Chrome on Android: records with the phone’s default camera, usually the front one • Another app that is holding the camera, like a video call, can block recording
Limits and quality
• Each take stops automatically at 10 minutes • The page doesn’t request a resolution, so the browser uses its default camera size, which can be below your camera’s maximum • The preview is muted to avoid feedback; your voice is still recorded • No watermark or logo is added
Tips for a better take
• Put the light in front of you, not behind you • Raise the camera to eye level • Use a headset or USB mic to reduce room echo • Record a 10-second test first to check framing and sound
Frequently asked questions
What is an online webcam recorder?
An online webcam recorder captures video from your camera and sound from your microphone inside a web page. This one uses the browser’s MediaRecorder, so there is no app to install. The result is a single video file you can replay and download.
How do I record from my webcam online?
1. Click Start recording. 2. Choose Allow when the browser asks for the camera and microphone. 3. Speak or present while the timer runs. 4. Click Stop recording, play the take and click Download.
Is my webcam video uploaded?
No. Recording happens in your browser, and the file stays in this tab until you download it. SocQ’s servers never receive the video, and closing the tab discards anything you haven’t saved.
Is it free, with no watermark or time limit?
Yes, it’s free and nothing is stamped on the video. Each recording can be up to 10 minutes long; the tool stops at that point, and you can start a new take right away.
What format is the webcam video saved in?
Chrome, Edge and Firefox save WebM with VP8 video and Opus audio. Safari may produce MP4, and the file name shows which one you got. Most editors open both; convert WebM to MP4 if an app rejects it.
Does the webcam recorder work on my phone?
Yes, in most current mobile browsers, including Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. The phone usually starts with its front camera, and the page has no button for switching cameras.
How do I choose a different camera or microphone?
The tool uses the devices your browser offers by default. In Chrome or Edge, click the camera icon in the address bar or open Site settings to pick another camera or mic, then reload the page. Firefox lets you choose the device in its permission prompt.
Why does the page say permission was denied?
The browser blocked camera or microphone access, or another app such as a video call is using the camera. Allow access in the address bar’s site settings, close other camera apps, then click Start recording again. On a Mac, also check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera.
Why can’t I hear myself while recording?
The live preview is muted on purpose so your speakers don’t feed back into the microphone. Your voice is still being recorded. Play the finished take in the result player to hear it.
Can I record my screen and webcam together?
Not in this tool; it records only the camera and microphone. Use the online screen recorder for your screen, then place the two clips together in a video editor.
For developers
Study public creator videos
Your webcam takes stay on your device. When you need public videos, posts or transcripts from YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, SocQ APIs return them as structured records, limited to public content.
