How to use this tool

YouTube’s monetization goal is counted in watch hours, but most creators think in views and minutes watched, which makes progress hard to judge. This calculator converts views and average view duration into total watch hours, so you can see what a video, playlist or month of uploads adds up to. It helps small channels working toward the Partner Program and anyone planning how many views a watch-hour target needs.

  1. 01

    Enter your views

Type the view count into Views using digits only, such as 100000. It can be a single video, a playlist or your channel total for a date range.

  2. 02

Add average view duration in seconds

Enter Average view duration (seconds) from YouTube Studio. Convert minutes first: 2:00 is 120 seconds and 3:45 is 225 seconds.

  3. 03

    Calculate your watch hours

Select Calculate to see Watch hours and the formula used. Raise or lower Views to find roughly how many you need for a target such as 4,000 hours, then select Copy.

How YouTube watch time is calculated

Watch hours = views × average view duration in seconds ÷ 3,600. Average view duration (AVD) is the mean time each view lasted, so multiplying it by views gives total time watched. Dividing by 3,600 turns seconds into hours. Worked example: 40,000 views with an AVD of 4:30 (270 seconds) gives 40,000 × 270 ÷ 3,600 = 3,000 watch hours.

How many views you need for 4,000 watch hours

Views needed = target hours × 3,600 ÷ AVD in seconds. For 4,000 hours: • AVD 2:00 (120 s): 120,000 views • AVD 3:00 (180 s): 80,000 views • AVD 5:00 (300 s): 48,000 views • AVD 8:00 (480 s): 30,000 views Double these figures for an 8,000-hour target. Longer average viewing cuts the views you need, which is why retention matters as much as clicks.

Which watch hours count toward monetization

At the time of writing, YouTube’s help center counts qualified public watch hours from public long-form videos over the last 12 months, on a rolling basis. Watch time from private, unlisted or deleted videos, ad campaigns, Shorts in the Shorts feed and unlisted or deleted livestreams doesn’t count. The current threshold is 4,000 hours with 1,000 subscribers; YouTube has announced 8,000 hours for new applicants from February 1, 2027. This calculator can’t tell which views qualify, so compare its result with YouTube Studio.

Ways to grow watch time

• Open with a strong hook so fewer viewers leave in the first 30 seconds. • Cut slow sections; check the audience retention graph for drop-off points. • Make videos long enough to cover the topic fully, rather than padding. • Group videos into playlists and use end screens to send viewers to the next one. • Convert livestreams to public replays so their watch time stays on the channel.

Frequently asked questions

What is a YouTube watch time calculator?

A YouTube watch time calculator converts views and average view duration into total hours watched. This one multiplies your views by the average seconds per view and divides by 3,600. It’s useful for tracking progress toward a watch-hour goal or estimating what a planned video could add.

How do I calculate YouTube watch time?

1. Find the views for the video or period. 2. Find the average view duration and convert it to seconds. 3. Multiply views by those seconds. 4. Divide by 3,600 to get hours. For example, 10,000 views × 180 seconds ÷ 3,600 = 500 watch hours.

How many views do I need for 4,000 watch hours?

Divide 14,400,000 (4,000 hours in seconds) by your average view duration in seconds. With a 3-minute AVD that’s 80,000 views; with a 5-minute AVD it’s 48,000 views. Only qualified public long-form views count toward YouTube’s threshold.

Do YouTube Shorts count toward 4,000 watch hours?

No. YouTube’s help center says watch hours from Shorts views in the Shorts feed don’t count toward the long-form watch-hour threshold. Shorts have their own path into the Partner Program, which at the time of writing is 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.

Is the result the same as my qualified watch hours?

Not necessarily. The calculator estimates total watch time from the numbers you enter, while YouTube only counts qualified hours from public long-form videos in a rolling 12-month window. Use YouTube Studio’s Earn section for your official count.

How do I convert average view duration to seconds?

Multiply the minutes by 60 and add the remaining seconds. For example, 3:45 is 3 × 60 + 45 = 225 seconds, and 1:20 is 80 seconds. Enter that number in Average view duration (seconds).

Where do I find average view duration on YouTube?

Open YouTube Studio and go to Analytics, where average view duration appears in the engagement or content reports. Each video’s own analytics page also shows it. Use the same date range for views and average view duration so the result lines up.

How long will it take to reach 4,000 watch hours?

Divide the hours you still need by the watch hours you gain per day. If you have 1,500 hours and gain about 25 a day, the remaining 2,500 hours take around 100 days. Because YouTube uses a rolling 12-month window, old hours drop off as new ones come in.

Does the calculator access my YouTube Studio data?

No. It runs in your browser with only the views and seconds you type, and it doesn’t connect to YouTube or upload your numbers to a server. Copy the figures from YouTube Studio yourself.

Is the YouTube watch time calculator free?

Yes. It’s free with no signup, login or download. Enter views and average view duration, select Calculate and repeat as often as you like.

For developers

Analyze public YouTube videos and channels

Use SocQ APIs to collect public YouTube videos, channels, transcripts and comments, such as public view counts across uploads, to plan which topics can drive more watch time. Watch hours and retention stay in YouTube Studio and aren’t available through the API.
