How to use this tool

To make a photo black and white, add it here and pick a tone: the grayscale version appears instantly, ready to download. The converter uses perceived brightness, so skies, skin and greenery keep natural-looking shades of gray. Use it for moody portraits, clean product shots or a consistent black and white look across an Instagram grid. Everything runs in your browser, free and without a watermark.

Click Download for one photo or Download ZIP for a batch. JPG photos are saved as JPG; other formats as PNG at the same width and height.

How the conversion works

Each pixel becomes a gray with the same perceived brightness, using the Rec. 709 weights: 21% red, 72% green and 7% blue. Greens therefore look lighter than blues, just as they do to the eye, which keeps landscapes and portraits rich in tone.

Choosing a tone

• Natural: faithful grayscale for products, documents and archives • High contrast: bold portraits, street and architecture shots • Soft: gentle, low-contrast look for lifestyle and wedding photos • Compare all three in seconds; the preview updates instantly

Black and white for social media

• Use one tone for every photo in a carousel or grid for a cohesive feed • Strong light, shadow, texture and faces make the best black and white images • Add all photos at once and save them together with Download ZIP • For sepia, vintage or noir with a vignette, use SocQ’s Photo Filter
