How to use this tool

Two questions, one calculator. Convert a yearly salary into hourly, daily, weekly and monthly pay to compare job offers. Or, if you freelance or create content for brands, start from the income you want to take home and get the hourly and day rate that covers taxes, business costs and the hours you can actually bill.

    Choose the calculation

Salary to hourly converts a yearly salary. Freelance rate works out what to charge from the income you want to keep.

    Enter your figures

Add the yearly amount, the hours you work or bill each week and the weeks you work each year. Freelance rate also asks for yearly expenses and a tax rate.

See the hourly rate, a day rate and either weekly and monthly pay or the yearly revenue you need. Copy them into a quote or offer comparison.

Salary to hourly

Hourly pay = yearly salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year). A full-time year is usually 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, so a $60,000 salary is about $28.85 an hour. Monthly pay is the salary ÷ 12. All figures are gross pay, before tax, with benefits counted separately.

Freelance rate formula

Revenue needed = income goal ÷ (1 − tax rate) + yearly expenses. Hourly rate = revenue needed ÷ (billable hours per week × working weeks). The tax step is simplified: it treats your rate as a flat average. Use your own effective tax rate, including self-employment tax where it applies.

Plan for realistic billable hours

Freelancers spend part of every week on admin, pitching, editing and learning, which clients don’t pay for directly. Many plan on 20 to 30 billable hours a week and 44 to 48 working weeks a year to leave room for holidays and sick days. Planning with your real billable hours gives you a rate that covers your whole year.

From hourly rate to project price

Clients often prefer a fixed price. Estimate the hours a project takes, multiply by your rate and add a buffer for revisions. For sponsored content, the influencer rate calculator adds usage rights and exclusivity, and the PayPal fee calculator shows what you keep after payment fees.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the yearly salary by the hours you work in a year. For $60,000 at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks: 60,000 ÷ 2,080 ≈ $28.85 an hour.

How many working hours are in a year?

A full-time year is commonly counted as 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. Paid holidays are included in that figure.

How much should I charge per hour as a freelancer?

Start from the income you want to keep, add taxes and business costs, and divide by the hours you can realistically bill. The Freelance rate option does this for you.

Why is my freelance rate so much higher than my old hourly wage?

As a freelancer you pay your own taxes, equipment, software, insurance and time off, and you bill fewer hours than you work. The rate must cover all of that.

What tax rate should I use?

Use your effective rate: total tax as a share of income. If you aren’t sure, a tax professional or last year’s return can give you a realistic figure.

What is a day rate?

It’s what you charge for a full day of work. Here it is the hourly rate times your weekly hours divided by five working days.

Does the salary conversion include tax?

Salary to hourly converts gross pay, before tax, so you can compare offers on the same basis. Benefits and overtime are separate.

Can I use it for part-time work?

Yes. Enter your actual weekly hours, such as 20, and the weeks you work.

Are my numbers stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to SocQ or saved.

Is the hourly rate calculator free?

Yes. It’s free with no signup and no limit.
