How to use this tool

To convert PNG to ICO, add your image, choose the icon sizes and download the .ico file. The converter packs several sizes into one ICO, so your icon stays sharp in browser tabs, bookmarks, the Windows taskbar and the desktop. Non-square images are centred on a transparent square, and the whole process runs in your browser.

    Add your image

    Click Choose files or drop a PNG, JPG, WebP or AVIF image up to 30 MB. A square image of 256 × 256 px or larger gives the sharpest icons.

    Choose the sizes

    Favicon packs 16, 32 and 48 px for browser tabs and bookmarks. All sizes adds 24, 64, 128 and 256 px for Windows shortcuts and app icons.

    Download the ICO

    Click Download to save the .ico file. Rename it favicon.ico for your website.

Adding the favicon to your site

Upload favicon.ico to the root of your site (example.com/favicon.ico); browsers find it there automatically. You can also link it in the page head: <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any"> For iPhone home screens, add a 180 × 180 PNG as apple-touch-icon.

Which sizes you need

• 16 px: browser tabs • 32 px: taskbar, high-density tabs and bookmarks • 48 px: Windows site shortcuts • 64–256 px: desktop icons and large views in Windows Explorer

Design tips for small icons

• Use a simple shape or one or two letters for clarity at 16 px • Leave a little margin around the edges • Strong contrast reads well on light and dark browser themes • A transparent background looks cleanest; SocQ’s Image Background Remover can cut out a logo first

How do I convert PNG to ICO?

What sizes are inside the ICO?

Favicon: 16, 32 and 48 px. All sizes: 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px.

Does the ICO keep transparency?

Yes. Each size is stored as a 32-bit PNG inside the ICO, so transparent areas stay transparent.

What if my image isn’t square?

It’s scaled to fit and centred on a transparent square, so the whole image is kept. For an icon that fills the square edge to edge, crop it to 1:1 first with SocQ’s Crop Image tool.

Is this a favicon generator?

Yes. The Favicon option creates a standard favicon.ico for websites.

Can I use the ICO for Windows shortcuts?

Yes. Choose All sizes so Windows has a version up to 256 px for every view.

Can I convert JPG to ICO?

Yes. JPG, WebP and AVIF images work too. For a transparent icon, start from a PNG or WebP with a transparent background.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The icon is built in your browser, so your image stays on your device.

Why does my favicon still show the old icon?

Browsers cache favicons for a long time. Hard-refresh the page, clear the cache or open the site in a private window to see the new one.
